How can you eliminate carbon buildup?

Is there an additive that would remove carbon build up?

I have some Sea Foam. How strong could I mix it in with the gas before it does more harm than good?

The Perfect cure for carbon, is a perfect  mix of fuel! To eliminate carbon you can add OMC Carbon Gaurd to your fuel. Sea Foam is a good preventive. But it does not prevent carbon. OMC will evaporate carbon as it tries to form., I ALWAYS run Synthetic 2t oil because it will burn cleaner, and I don't have to add as much Sea Foam. Still after all that I add 1/2 oz Sea Foam, and 1/2 oz Golden Spectro to EVERY gallon of fuel. Even though I run an injector wired wide open. 2T BRO! You will find from plug chops exactly what you need. Run the same mix thru several tanks w/ several plugs, and you will find what works best for you

An oldie but a goody. Water vapor injection does a great job of cleaning carbon out of an egine and keeping it clean.

I have done that on almost every engine I have owned. You can also drizzel water into a running engine to remove a good deal or build up inside. I hesitate to recommend it to others because it is too easy to bend/break a crankshaft.

Marvel will add to your problem. You can try revving your engine to 1/3 throttle, and pour a fine stream of water past the open carb. It will get sucked in, and super heat into steam. It's the steam that softens the accumulated carbon, and washes it out. This MUST be done carefully! Too much water will hydro-lok the piston, and something WILL break. A  spray bottle w/ a good stream may work as well.  If you begin to here pre-detonation Back off the throttle & water. Everything else is a preventative. In 1966 Pontiac used water injection in a ltd number of GTO's. They stopped using it because of the advanced timing, and the fact people did not fill the empty water bottle. It is easy to go wrong with this method so decide NOT to get angry w/ anyone Before you try

Would it work and would it be safer / better or worse to use one of those home steamer cleaners?  You could place it at the air intake and let the carb suck the steam in?

That I could not say. The steam will condensate just from the air flow itself. It may however be an easier way to manage the amount of water injected!?

Being in vapor form may also help for a more uniform distribution of the H2O throughout the chamber.
