I just recently ended up with what I attribute to water getting in the engine on mine.  I've never had any problems with it before.  More recently however, I moved my air filter back and to the side a little so it now sticks out more than before.  We had 2 days straight of extremely heavy rain and I think some got through.  I've recently been putting a zip-lock bag over the filter when I know it will be sitting in the rain for an extended period.  Haven't had any issues since.  I've never had any problems riding in the rain.  For the most part the oil on the filter keeps the water from getting through.  The performance increase is IMO well worth the extra vigilance of wrapping it up when it's parked in the rain!

...ive done some crazy things to my scoot...

..i hope i ain't leading anybody toward damaging their's......

..dudes, don't jump into these kinda things without first hittin' the basics...

..read your plug, believe what it's telling you...

..then listen to your engine....learn it's song....

..it's all about tuning...as you would a guitar..or a piano...

..learn your engine's sounds, the harmonics, the resonance from the exhaust...

..the whines of the cvt...they all gotta come together..

..i think that harmonics are the key to setting up a 4-stroke...

...yeah,...

..why?..

..because the less of a ...zzzzwwwzzzzwwwwzzzz..i hear (feel) at top speed..

....the faster she seems to run....

..and even if you can't hear what i'm talkin' about, do your plug chops...

..and trust your chops...they don't lie....

..tho lean IS fast!!!!.....DONT RUN LEAN!!!!.....there is a balance....

..okay, with all that bein' said...is there a "performance" cooling fan for these A50s??..

..that has more cubic (inches, centimeters) discharge..per revolution than stock??

..yeah, i could probly google it, but this is wwaaayyyy more fun....

..i want more air into the carb, and i also want to assure sufficient engine cooling...

...i'm contemplating gettin' rid of the K&N completely...

..i may need to open the intake...i dunno...that's next....afterthought....

..one drawback in doin this, so far as i know, is that it will silence my scoot like crazy...

..i liked that throaty, wwaaaah sound that the K&N gave it...lol..

..though, that Indy whine is kinda cool too....

I got into a thread on Scoot Inv. about the same thing. The fan is actually a vacuum generator. It creates a vortex in its center, and the displaced air has to go somewhere; RIGHT! In My Humble Opinion... The larger the CONE at the center of the fan=more efficient flow produced. The larger fan will need a modification of your shroud. Realistically you can simply cut the shroud to fit the fan, and the air flow over the engine would be mostly reduced. It takes NOTHING to mock up a shroud extension from a bleach bottle/soda bottle, ect,. Once you have the "mold/basic shape" cover the form w/ epoxy, and ANY kind of cloth. Pop out the mold, and trim your new CUSTOM piece to fit.
