2006 People 250 only goes 25mph, help
« on: April 07, 2010, 01:11:30 AM »
Never had to post before but tonight when I took off from a light the scoot would not go over 25mph. Would rev real high but it's almost like it's stuck in 2nd gear. Motor runs great. Currently 14,700km..2006.
I have a belt and new weights that I was planning on doing at 15K but now I'm wondering what is going on with this. Again, runs great but will not go to the next level...clutch?

That's not good!  I would suspect something up inside the cvt.  Pull the cover off and have a look.  It could be your clutch is worn out and not engaging

There are only 2 culprits. The clutch or the multi var. If anything else broke the scoot would not make 0 mph. Once you take the cvt cover off, and it is NOT obvious what happened, start the scoot on the center stand, and rev it up to see whats not working. Hey, welcome aboard!

Could it be a stretched belt? I had noticed what I thought was some burning smell, which I thought something had fallen on my exhaust..last night when I parked it. Tonight I had just exited the freeway and had come down to about a 45mph speed from about 60 on the highway.
I had put off doing a major service on it but now I have no excuse. I hate taking the body off it but I need to change the coolant, plug, belt and who knows maybe a clutch now..

If it were the clutch I would think it would not accelerate up to 25 normally.. It simply hits a wall..That has me thinking it has something to do with the weights but I've never torn into this setup so it will be a learning experience..wohoo!
Thanks for the welcome and response.

No troubles, The belt could be shredded. The extreme would be anything else. The no excuse part is the most prevalent. Once you have the cover of to replace the parts you have, I think you will have answered your own post. If there is anything you don't recognize just ask!

Thanks much, probably will not be able to get to it until Thursday. I'll definitely be back with questions. Hopefully it will be very apparent. I have worked quite a bit on engines and transmissions but not with scooters. I don't have special tools but have all the usual stuff...hopefully it won't take much.

Since you have the new belt and rollers, I would install them  The belt is nearing the end of life and it may have stretched or your rollers may have flat sides and not rolling correctly.

I know when my newer sliders were installed wrong, my P250 would only go 55-60 when 75-80 was normal.  I changed them and now it does 80-85 easily.   The P250 and B&W use just about the same CVT and engine. I had to make a tool to hold the variator and clutch to be able to remove them.

My first one bent (shown in photo) so I made a new one with thicker straps. I found the straps and other bolts at Home Depot near the gate hinges and such.

Thanks for the info...
Ended up being the belt had lost a chunk of the ribs. Took everything out and examined rollers which were still at 23mm..new ones are about 23.5mm. Clutch and assembly looked fine. Blew out all the dust in the clutch assembly.
Ended up being a good thing after all. Gave me the incentive to go thru everything, changed the rear tire, coolant, oil, gear oil, plug, cleaned the motor and oiled the throttle linkage. All the bushings and bearings were in good shape. All I've got to do now is order an air filter...of course my local dealer didn't have one...
I'll get the body panels back on hopefully on Saturday and give her a spin. These scoots really are made well. Rugged and well put together...except the body fitting is a PITA. Pretty much every time I remove the panels some tab or something breaks off. aargh!

Sounds like a good maintenance day. Don't worry about the panels. I have broken almost all of them off. (tabs).
