Synthetic Oil And Engine Leakage?
« on: May 25, 2008, 10:28:41 AM »
When I purchased my S200 the dealer recommended to me that I not use full synthetic oil in my bike.  I've always been a big fan of Mobile 1 full synthetic motor oils.  The dealer claimed that a full synthetic would leak out of the bike?   ???  When I asked him to explain he said it was viscus enough to use in the bike.  :o   He said that they offered a semi-synthetic and that would be the best thing for it (10 bucks a quart)  ::)

Is any of this true?  Has anyone tried a full synthetic oil in their bike?

I want to make sure that I get the most miles I can without engine problems.

Nothing wrong with your language I understand you perfectly  ;)

I kinda figured the dealer was full of crap and only wanted to sell me their expensive oil.

agreed, go synthetic !!

but only after break-in for even semi-synthetic ... not before.
your dealiar was partly right, before break in the 'seal' has not set ...

What is the proper break in period.. I actually just did the first oil change with full synthetic  :o

That would depend on how you 'broke it in''... did you follow the ''old'' manufacturer guidlines ?
how many km's do you have now ?

I had 350 KM on it when I changed the oil.. I now have over 550 KM on it.

The area that I live in I didn't have the opportunity to break it in totally going under 40KM/h as I've seen suggested.. The first 200 KM was all mostly under 40 KM/h I try not to go a constant speed and I avoid going full throttle whenever I can however I'm not willing to die for the engine.

Do you think that I should take out the synthetic oil and put in regular again?

Travis,
I would bet you are fine. You already have too many miles to back it out anyway. On new engines (or newly rebuilt) as obxbikers states they recommend breakin with regular oil. Old engine builders still state this, some don't recommend synthetics at all.

There are lots of differing opinions on oils so whatever works for you I would stick with. I have seen both types used as well as many brands with good success.

If the 200 motor is anything like the 150, you would have a hard time tearing it up as long as you change the oil at required intervals.
