S200 vs SYM HD200
« on: May 29, 2008, 04:08:55 PM »
Can anyone comment on the differences between these 2 scoots?  I am doing some digging but wanted to open the topic to get some first hand experience.

This may be a little late, but from what I understand the biggest difference is that the SYM is water cooled, and has coated cylindars. If you live in hotter climates, and commute, you may be better off with the water cooled option. Also, I hear that you could possibly get more miles out of the SYM because of the coated cylendars.. I own an kymco S 200 myself, live in oregon and commute year around, 136 miles a week. Have had very few issues with the scoot.

The SYM HD200 is about the best money you can spend on a new scooter, right now.

I bet the Yager 200i will blow it away, though.  ;)

What do you think about Derbi GP1 250?

139 kg (in terms of weight between Agility 125 and People S250), 23 hp.

Must be a real rocket...

I own an S 200 and may not have ever even laid eyes on a Sym 200.  However there's a good comparison on the Internet if you go to http://www.justgottascoot.com/symhd200.htm

I love my S 200.  It's light and nimble.  With a huge topcase I can even do my grocery shopping with the thing.  I have a Passat wagon, but can fit 5-6 plastic shopping bags using the case, pet carrier, bag hook and a small backpack.

The two things I don't like about the S 200 are the low top end (below 60 MPH per GPS/68 indicated on speedo) with 200 lbs of me on it and crappy gas mileage (for a 163cc).  Well, there's one more thing.  A few days after I ride in the rain, rusty water comes out of the bleed holes on the top of the frame and drips all over the engine/transmission.

The Sym is a much more powerful scoot and should last longer as it's water cooled.   Unless you never plan to go 55, if the price is the same, go with the Sym.

I own both scoots. The SYM HD 200 just blows the People S 200 away.

Better ride, faster, quieter, smoother.

The one thing about the KYMCO:
If you want to make a few bucks on the side taking people for their motorcycle road test, the KYMCO is GREAT for that. It is so easy to handle, and so easy to do low speed turns, it is ideal for taking a road test.
Also I like the kick start, it gives me a sense of security (although it only works after the scoot is warmed up, what good is that?)?

When i was shopping for a modern scooter I looked at both the KYMCO s200 and the SYM HD200. For me the KYMCO was more to my liking because of it's simplicity. for me, the fact that the People s200 is air cooled, carberated and has a back up kick start are all good things. I like things I can easily maintain and fix myself. It is what I like about a old air cooled Vespas and VW bugs. It's that old punk rock DIY functionality. It's not the quickest or the most technical but I bet I will have fun doing my own work and keeping her on the road for a long time.  :)

Ha! not my bag of tea,but the mod potential at half the price  no contest, sym and kymco were the same company a one time.I uderstand but,i think Itt's easier to get kymco parts in the states and if your into the modding no where else to go.If i didn't work on my own stuff, the sym would be a better choice.
Kymco peoples too many ;) I'm not an expert just a full time hobbiest.

I did not join this forum to trash KYMCO, so if anyone is offended I apologize.
The KYMCO is more agile, and therefore better for strictly city riding. It takes corners and turns more easily, and can zip around traffic.

The SYM is more of a highway bike. It is faster (74+ MPH vs 60 MPH GPS), and rides very nicely on the highway.  I took the People S on the parkway, at 60 it is topped out, and it really whines! And it does not feel very stable. I did add the big Cupertini windshield (off for the summer) and Dr Pulley 14g sliders.

The SYM is OK on the street, but the center of gravity is different, and it is not as stable at low speeds. I dropped it in a parking lot standing still! Once moving however, the SYM is a better ride and much more stable, but a bit harder to make right turns, as you have to get a little more speed to be able to lean as the weight and center of gravity can drop the bike on a slow turn. The PeopleS is more like a moped, you can just lean it right over and recover.

So if you need  strictly a city bike, the KYMCO is good. And air cooled leaves less to worry about. But for the suburbs, the SYM is just twice the bike. Better ride, MUCH more top end, MUCH better and smoother acceleration, highway capable.

OK< so that's my opinion. YMMV. And I have nothing against KYMCO, I own one!

Why go out for a burger, when you've got a kymco at home?
