Impact wrench for boss
« on: May 25, 2010, 12:17:36 PM »
So I looked on Harbor Freight Tools to see what they had for impact wrenches, and I found a 1/2" ELECTRIC on sale for $49.99.  Will this do the trick to get that stubborn nut off?  Reason for my concern is that I see on their site that there's different sizes for them.  The link is below....I want to go pick it up in a few hours, so hopefully someone here will know!  Thanks!

This should definitely do it.  240lbs of torque! However, i managed to do get mine off with a vise-grip c-clamp holding the drive face and and LOT of effort getting the bolt to move on the wrench.  I think i need a bigger wrench.

Butttttt, that is a pretty decently priced impact wrench, i might even get it myself...

What should I use to reinstall the nut?  Just a little muscle?

the impact well work fine its the same one I use. when puting the nut back on just dont
force it to go to tight. you want tight but dont sit there and let it spin. and maybe ounce on just a
very small drop of lock tight on the out side of the nut only.

This is the one I use:  http://www.harborfreightusa.com/usa/itemdisplay/displayItem.do?itemid=90798&submit2=find+it
It works very well, and it's cordless!  I think I paid $35 on sale for it.  I think it's usually $45.  I use it to put the nut back on as it only has about 85 ft/lbs of torque.  It's plenty strong for anything I need it for though, however it wouldn't break the lug nuts loose on the car.

Hopefully there's someone on here that can help me right now....So, a friend of mine actually had a impact wrench (http://community.craftsman.com/Craftsman-19-2V-C3-Impact-Wrench-Add-On-reviews?tab=details) for me to borrow, so I took the cover off, and when I tried to take off the bolt, nothing happened!   ???  It has plenty of juice, so battery life isn't an issue....not sure what to do at this point.  I need to hit the road in an hour to get home for my sons baseball practice, and don't want to put the cover back on without having the new boss on.....anyone?

..i use a pair of Vise-Grip vise clamps to grip the o.d. of the flywheel, and a socket and ratchet to loosen the nut....

"o.d."....outer diameter?  Tj=his is sooo frustrating because I know that all I need to do is make this one more change and I'll be hittin the road at and around 45ish!   :)  This is the 3rd...count it, 3rd attempt to no avail....

Another question..what do you do to make sure you don't bend the raised portions of the fly wheel?  Or do you just position the vise grips in between perfectly?

...yeah, outter diameter...the clamps will seat between the teeth of the flywheel at roughly 180 degrees ...brace the handle's releasing lever against your boot, or a block of wood, and loosen the nut with a socket and ratchet...

..the first time you loosen this nut, is going to be difficult...it's seated tightly....

that's what I'm petrified of!  Last thing I want to do is snap a bolt!  I kid, I'm sure it'll be a pita, but it'll be worth it in the end!  Thanks again...you da' man!

Lol hey slinger remember when i had this same problem just 2 days ago? Haha.

I used my foot on the vise grip handle as leverage and pulled REALLLY hard on the wrench.  You gotta give it a lot of effort...
