..seeping seals..
« on: May 26, 2010, 12:18:18 AM »
...it's to be expected with the kms i've amassed, i reckon...

..both my engine's output shaft, and the gearbox input shaft's oil seals are beginning to weep....

..so, i'm going to be looking at some major repair tasks in the near future...

..anybody ever changed these seals??..and while i'm in there, what else should i replace??

I haven't replaced mine, but I took the gear box apart and the seals were fine so I left them alone.  I now have some spares for when they do leak. ;)  If you are careful you can replace the seals without taking anything apart as the seals are on the outside.  You can carefully pull the old ones out with a "dental pick"  and press the new ones in with a socket or something of the same diameter.

Yes it does!  You might want to be prepared to have to pull apart the engine.  From what I've heard on Scooter Invasion you shouldn't have to, but I haven't done it myself so I don't know how difficult it is.  It seems like the hardest part would be getting the old one out.

..i will..it's at th' plant in my toolbox...and i've gotta get me another camera....

..it's basiclly a slide hammer type tool, that has a cpl hardened steel appendages with about 75 degree angled prongs on the ends..

..gotta drill a cpl holes in opposite sides of the seal, insert the prongs, assemble the slide mechanism...then just hammer it out....lol...

..i'll have to modify it some for these small seals...might just make a smaller version...

..yeah, that'd be better...

..and i might make it 3-pronged...that'd be even better...

Before you get into yanking seals... You can add 1/2 oz. of BRAKE fluid to the gear box/engine. Run it for about 50 miles, and do a regular oil change. The brake fluid will softoe, and swell the seals. If you leave it too long, you wont have any seals left so try to do your riding in one shot. I did this to mine when I bought it, and have no leaks still.
