In my country, I do not wonder at all.
.

This is consequence of neoliberal capitalism that was happily developing after Reaganomics (supply-side economy of 80s), and it happens all over the world.

For people in US of A it just became very apparent in recent years, but in some other countries, these inequalities were bad before and in the past years just became worse.

In the future more and more wealth will be in hands of less and less people.

..i hear ya!!!

..the local news showed a clip of an oil-covered pelican, floating in the mire...

..touched me....

There is a country that produces 40 % of oil used in US of A that practically floats in the middle of oil spill created mostly by Shell, around 7000 of them in the past 30 years.
Just one of them is 50 TIMES bigger spill than Exxon Valdez.
Around 150 mil people live there, which is roughly half of the population of US of A.
This state is called Nigeria, yet, you hear very little about what is going on in the delta of the river Niger.

We are all very sensitive to what happens to us and very insensitive to what happens to others.
Of course, this does not change current situation in the Gulf.

as for our part.... to me we should be developing a way to take the hydrogen from water and using it as a power source..... stop bitching about the cost to convert and  develope the technology to do it effectively

It is clear from the last sentence that you realize this is not possible. The laws of physics are applicable here: you have to invest more energy into this process that the energy you would gain from hydrogen, hydrogen cell technology included.

Also, hydrogen is extremely explosive, volatile, and cannot be easily stored, transported and used in vehicles.

p.s. I read that in the next 10 yrs we can expect real change of general level of food prices + 40 % because of usage of certain plant cultures for fuel.... not nice...

That has already made an impact in florida. Corn is grown year round. They have found they can charge more per ton to sell it out of state to fuel plants. Soooo the price per pound has tripled at the market. Nothing like a double whammy to keep prices rising. Another fact about the crude from the bp well. It is not fuel grade oil. It is the oil that plastics are made from. I am waiting for the national increase in fuel prices to contradict the facts.

The problem isn't so much THAT it happened, it's WHERE it happened and all our southern neighbors  it affected.  If it was half way around the world, it'd be a one day story. Sorry to have to say, but accidents happen...humans are fallable. Can this board complain and then go jump on our petroleum powered scoots? Not trying to sound harsh, but that is the reality.

You are completely right! Like axy pointed out there are worse problems in other parts of the world, but it doesn't pay to cover those stories. In fact I will dare to say there may be some $'s trading hands to NOT cover many of them. If only we all knew what was really happening... Fact: Russians have had MANY under water well leaks. They literally explode the sea bed, and let nature close the leak. bp I believe needs to keep the well active for profit, and is not willing to abandon the site. It is apparently more cost effective for them to handle it the way they are. Throw billions at the feds, and retain control over the site. Blood money

I still feel hydrogen is the answer, just need to get the scientist together to develope the tech. Put water in your tank and it converts it to hydro (yeah a long way off from this....) but I know if great minds work together it can be done...  though it does not solve the current problem at hand

or solve the greed problem....

and yes froot loops are my friend ha ha ha

Or the guy that started that computer company that would NEVER infringe on anyones right to free choice, or condone collecting info about any person on earth. Or maybe that other guy that is from Texas that would preach FREE S PEACH, and allow every word on the Internet to be recorded. It just may be that Hippie Grass is a bad thing after all. It turned most of them into ...Zombies   Ps Would someone define sex for me so I completely understand... As far as I Know... I can't remember!   Pss. Thanks Guys, and Gals    Zombie

So, it's not that they can't stop it but they don't want to? That is even worse. You are right zombie, big toilet.

Guys, do not forget two things.

1. It is quite possible that somebody (either Shell of Exxon Mobil) will take over BP entirely, or gain a significant share in BP owner structure, especially if BP will be pressed hard to create 20 bln US$ fund for damage reparations.

2. Cleaning is a BIG BUSINESS. A lot of money will change hands here and do not forget that an army of "contractors" will come to the site and shores to do the cleanup operation. Of course, that money (earnings) will be concentrated in hands of other multinationals, mostly American-owned. This will not help the population living on the shores of the ocean that will receive 5000 US$ or so in compensation, but this is in line with economic redistribution of capitalist way of production.

This is the world we live in.

There are things that simply cannot be done, or at least they cannot be done in efficient manner. Using water for propulsion of vehicles is, at current stage of science development, just as likely as using nothing to achieve the same. In science, this is known as "empty hypothesis".
