Variator oil leaking

Hello,

My 8 month old (4500 km.) downtown seams to leak some variator oil.. I found a few drops on my rear wheel and the bottom of the variator is sweating a bit. Is this normal for a nearly new bike or should I be worried and get the hell back to the dealer? What happens if the variator runs dry?

Hey, Bigkev, welcome to the forum!

Variator does not have any oil in it. However, the final drive at the rear does. Yours has probably been over-filled. The only way on a DT300i and most other CVT Kymcos is to drain the gear box completely and filling with the proper amount.

Pull your variator cover and see if the leak is up front, variator, or at the rear, "transmission".
I`m betting it is the oil seal behind the variator.
It is a fairly easy fix for a trained tech.
If you have a warranty, take to dealer. Turn around should be a week or less, depending on their work load.
If it is indeed the oil seal behind the variator, you are leaking a small amount of engine oil from your crank case. Just keep watch on your engine oil level. Add a little if necessary until you can get it fixed. It is common for oil seals to start leaking or be installed crooked at the factory. Should not happen on a new scoot but, sometimes it does.

  The vent hose from the gears, go,s to the air intake, check there first,  then it would leak down to the back of the variator, not in it, if it is tight,  so check both for oil,

The dealer doesn't think it's transmission oil because it hasn't got the specific smell.
He thinks it's grease applied on the axe on the dry side of the variator that melted and dripped out.
He cleaned it and I have to observe for a while to see it keeps leaking.

Ok, after having to miss my DT for two weeks I can finally pick it up tomorrow.
Big discussion between the seller, Kymco and the garage that fixed the issue.
Nobody felt any resposibillity to pick up the bill.

Bad bad way to go for Kymco on this one.

The problem was a leaking seal inside the variator between the dry and wet side of it.
According to mechanics I've spoke a 1 hour job to fix.

Clarifying...You mention the "Seller" which I presume is the Kymco Dealer?, "Kymco" which I presume is Kymco USA? and the "Garage that repaired it" which sounds like it is not an authorized Kymco dealer?? Please explain.

Since the original post you said your Kymco was in your possession for 8 months (4500 km) and it was leaking oil. Is this a NEW bike, is it still under warranty?

I’d like to say new. My bike is about the same age with about 4900 miles on her.

The seller as in 'the garage/shop I bought the bike.
Kymco as in the importer of the bikes and the garage as in an official Kymco dealer nearby.
I bought the bike over a 2 hours drive from home.
Oh... And it all happened a long way from the USA, as in The Netherlands.

And the finish the story, it was the krankshafs sealing that was leaking not a sealing in the variator.
