Aggravating
« on: May 07, 2016, 09:15:02 PM »
2013 Super 8.  Runs kind of choppy on the throttle into it warm up real good. Then if I stop for an hour break, its a pain getting it restarted. Today worn the battery down trying. I was wondering if anybody else had this problem??   I'm thinking more on the lines of flooding.

I have not changed the spark plug. I bought it used, so I don't know about the previous owner either.

WHY have you not performed basic maintenance and troubleshooting?

Spark plug is the first thing I would try. Be very careful not to over-tighten the new one. I know you are new, but I would recommend you do a basic maintenance on the scoot like Tortoise said. You do not know what has been neglected.

Sounds like valves to me, but I'm more of a 2 stroke guy. Maybe a compression check could narrow down some things.

Is there an easy way to replace it with a manual choke?

I would recommend doing the basic maintenance first. Could only help. Only then would I personally change the auto-choke. Did you change the plug and adjust the valves?  Did you check/replace the air filter? Did you check the vacuum hoses for leaks? Try the simple stuff first. It will be much better and cheaper than throwing parts at a problem. I have learned the hard way.

I agree with you about the maintenance. Took me quite a bit of tinkering, but I eventually got my People 50 to start and run OK when it's cold. Poor cold start is a known gripe on these.

I emphasized ok, because it's still a little temperamental.  I regularly have to "hand" choke it to get it to start. By hand choke, I mean covering the air filter inlet with my hand while I crank it over.  Once it starts, it runs great.

The other thing that I found works is to crank it a second or so with the kill switch on and the start it. Seams too prime it a little.

I would ask first if you did any mods to it.

Maybe a sticking choke ??

Could be as simple as a 3 dollar spark plug. Basics first IMHO  ;)

These are the reasons for manufacturers turning to fuel injection.
This weekend I am going to remove the auto choke and install a blank plate in its place. Will post the results

That will leave the choke open, if these are the same as 50cc 4t carbs. The choke needle drops when warm after a bit of having the voltage applied to it.
