Air Cleaner idea
« on: May 23, 2016, 12:52:12 AM »
I need to replace my air cleaner soon 2013 Super 8 150), I was just wondering something.   Instead of buying one online.   A local ATV shop in town has filter material (Uni Filter Bulk Fine Foam Filter) that you cut to fit. I was wondering if this would work on Kymco's???   So basically would have to rip out the air cleaner material from the original, then cut to fit.

Would save a lot of money.

Other riders on here have done that. It's freerer flowing, so you'll probably have to put in bigger jets on your carb.

I did this to the Downtown that was stolen. Worked well. Got to salvage the home-modified filter!

What are air filters . . . . $30? I found an OEM on eBay for 16 shipped to me but that was a rare bargain. My original lasted 8500 miles and I only changed it cause I was planning on selling it. Considering the number of miles I got out of it, it really wasn't expensive. I probably put more than $30 in oil and gear oil over that time but you don't hear of people trying to skimp on oil costs. Changing the setup of the air filter (to me) just invites problems that may have to be solved later. If you are happy with the performance and aren't planning on trying to get more performance out of your Super8 then I'd suggest to bite the bullet and get a new OEM filter.

I used some Uni Filter foam and an old air filter and made myself a foam air filter.

Stock filter:

I pulled out the paper element but some of it stuck to the plastic.  I ended up using a dremel tool to grind the plastic edges flat.  Then I used E600 to glue in the foam which I had cut to size.

This is what it looked like after I oiled it with No Toil filter oil:

I seems to run the same as before, I can't tell any difference.  It's only been on for a couple hundred miles.

Looks nice and neat, good job!! But, is there any long term effects? I'm going to replace mine with an OEM filter. I would think that Kymco uses the slotted paper filter for a reason. I've come to the conclusion, that nothing for these scoots is cheap. I use the best oil that I can buy, I'm going to buy OEM belts and filters.

You can find E6000 at Wally World.

Dirt bikes which are designed for much dustier conditions all come with oiled foam air filters.  My Aprilia Scooter came with oiled foam filters.  I use good oil and OEM belts but I don't see any drawbacks to using a foam filter.
