Picked up my first Scoot

Hi guys I just picked up my first ever scooter. 2009 Super 8. Only had 700 miles on it.

I had a quick question, sometimes when I push the starter it doesn't start right away. I need to hit the starter 10-15 times then it will finally start. But if I kick the kick starter it'll fire right up.

I replaced the battery in it so I know it's not that. Anyone have any other ideas what it could be?

We need more info.  Does the motor crank and not fire up or not crank at all?

Curious though.....why'd you buy a vehicle that takes 10-15 attempts to start?
What did previous owner say when you pointed this out?

When I would hit the button it would just make a clicking noise. But now it seems to fire right up on the first try, sometimes need to click it a few times. I believe it is the starter in it that may need replaced but for now it's fine. Plus if I kick start it'll fire right up.

When I went to look at it the guy said it doesn't run. He was clueless and didn't know much. He said it had just sat in the garage for a few years without running so I figured it was the combo of the battery being dead and the old gasoline inside the tank.

Normally I wouldn't make a purchase like this without seeing it run and trying it out but I got a very very good deal on it. Practically stole the thing

Let me try my hand at this. I for sure don't know all there is to know about troubleshooting so someone correct me (please) if I'm wrong.

Kick starts fine so that leads me to the starting electrical system. Could be one of three things. The actual starter switch on the handle bar. An intermittent wiring short. The starter.

Probably need a wiring diagram for these.
You can visually inspect (for wear/cracks) the wiring and use a multimeter for continuity on each wire.

Manually make the connection on the start switch to make it start (can we even do this?). If it starts every time then it is the switch.

Not sure how to check the starter other than on my car when it doesn't start, I've tapped it with a hammer (don't over do it [at your own risk]) to get it off the "dead spot". If it starts then, I'd replace the starter.


How'd I do? Just trying to help. I've always been a little shy on giving troubleshooting advice because I don't want to say either some nonsense or just lead someone a stray.

Also I had a question and tried searching but couldn't find an answer. When I first turn the key and start my super 8 before it displays the time it shows three numbers that keep going up. I think now it is at 111. Is this like a trip mileage or maybe the hours?

Not sure, my digital readout stopped working when I had some battery issues. I think I fried it. If it is as simple as a trip meter, it should be covered in the Owners Manual.

Is that scooter throwing a fault code?....with those numbers.
What says the owners manual?
Might try electric contact spray into start and brake light switches (the little black plastic switch that activates brake lights and start circuit)
Work swiiches with cleaner and thumb to improve contact.

I can't believe it is a fault code because the number goes up. When I first bought it was at 107 now I am at 114...
