Agility 50 not starting. Would appreciate some guidance.
« on: June 12, 2016, 04:34:18 PM »
First of all Hi to all, i've been looking though the forum for the past week now and found plenty of help and guides but i'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with it all so thought i'd ask for help.

So I bought a used 2009 Agility 50 a week ago. It was running ok but not great. Gave it a service for piece of mind and changed the low oil, dirty air filter and old spark plug and a ran a bit better. Also Cut the CDI for a bit extra performance.

Coming home from work on it on Thursday i noticed it was bogging down at high rpm/high speed so that wasn't great but then it just died and i coasted to a stop at the side of road. Pulled it off the road and tried to restart it with electric and it just turned over, kick start had no effect. Ended up having to push it home for miles where it is now sat not working.

So I've taken the seat off to check things:

Spark Plug It has a spark although the end is white so not getting any fuel. put my finger down the hole and can feel suction when turning it over.

Valve Adjustment Heard it could be valve timings so had that open and re-calibrated them to 0.004 each.

Air Air system seems fine, and i've changed the filter.

Fuel  I've noticed the carb isn't getting any fuel from the petcock/filter so i changed the filter for a new one which didn't help. Checked all fuel hoses and they are all ok. Took off the vacuum hose to petcock and sucked with other hose into a bucket and fuel came out so petcock seems fine I think?

Carb So thought i'd take the carb off to have a look and potential clean. Drained the fuel out and went to open it up but as always there's one screw that won't come out so had to give up on that. may just replace with a new one as they are cheap enough.

So after all that and maybe other bits it's still not starting at all just turns over. Any help/guidance/input of what else it might be would be greatly appreciated.

Run-stop switch? Battery connections? Ground points?

If you got spark and do get fuel by sucking, maybe the intake manifold or the gasket between carb and cylinder head has leaks and not creating enough under pressure to suck fuel to the carb. While you have the carb out, check those as well for visible cracks etc.
Fill the carb by sucking the under pressure hose and see if it starts but dyes soon.
You might want to check the diaphragm of the carb as well. And try to open the carb again  from the other end as well cos there might be something stuck in the jets.
Put some crc on the screw and press downwards with force with the screwdriver and see if the screw opens. If not use a drill and get a new screw.

If that fails;
you might need to check if valves are okey but that takes a bit more tools and time. You'll find videos on youtube about taking apart a gy6 cylinder head etc.

Test cylinder compression.  If reading does NOT rise after squirting a little oil in the spark plug hole . . valve seats may have carbon deposits causing marginal compression.  May be able to rent a compression tester from an auto parts store . . 10mm spark plug adapter is required.

Thanks for replies.

Scooter doesn't have a kill switch to my knowledge. Battery seems ok. Not sure about ground points.

Where do i find the " gasket between carb and cylinder head"?

I was thinking of just getting a new carb and inlet manifold to be honest cos the carb seems pretty messed up and i can't get the screw out without spending money on something to do it so i may aswell buy the parts.

If the valves aren't ok then will that mean big money to replace?

Haven't got a compression tester and not easily rented in the UK. Wish i had all these tools. I'm feeling it is some kind of vacuum leak/compression issue so not sure what to do really.

Surprisingly it is between the carb and cylinder. Well to be exact it is under the intake manifold and over cylinder head.

About the valves, there might just be some carbon deposits between valve and the valve seating like tortoise told. I've read that to get those deposits moving, just keep using the kick starts and with luck the crap will get out between valve and the seat.

But first, put the carb back and suck fuel to the carb and see if it starts.

Btw, d/l this and use it:
