J Costa variator.

I have read that J Costa has completely re-vamped their entire variator line. All new metals, the coatings of individual parts, steal instead of aluminum on/in the bell etc. Sounds like all the bugs have been worked out? Has anyone put this on their X500? And if so has the rpm's dropped at freeway speeds? I just road a 2003 Aprilia Atlantic scooter with a 460 cc engine. It turns 6'000 rpm's at 80 mph!!!! Get's 55 mpg at 75 mph, and will do 100 mph. My 2007 X500 is spinning 8.000 rpm at 80 mph. At 80 I would be lucky to get 40 mpg if that? I am going to buy a new scooter or bike soon, but I am done with crap mpg and screaming rpm's at freeway speeds. Is there anyway to lower rpm's on the X500's? I can't stand riding at 65 all day long on freeways anymore. I am going to get run over and die. After about 65,000 miles of this I am ready for a change. I would like to get a new X500, but I need to be able to cruise at 75 or more without feeling like the engine is going to blow. And the Aprilia has a 4.5 gallon tank to boot! But the scooter has to many other issues to deal with that can't seem to be fixed. So I am not going down that road again as I had to do with my Harley's. (JUNK). Anyone used this variator? Have anyone used a polini variator? The Dr Pulley variator, or Mallosi? Let me know. There are some great deals on new X500's out there, but all I do is tour, and stopping for gas every 100 miles or so is getting old as is the screaming engine.  :-*

I have a Malossi Multivar 2000 on my Xciting (carb, 2006) for the last 25.000 miles (about 5 years I think). I changed the belt once just to be sure. It works flawlessly so far.
I think it's a huge improvement to the original setup. I handles 100 m/ph with ease and takes of like a rocket.
About 80 miles on one tank (12,5 liters)

The Malossi is much cheaper than the JCosta. I know this bescause I have a JCosta on my Tmax. The JCosta pins wear out very fast also. The Malossi rollers are still original in my Xciting.

Please note about the improvements that J Cost has made that I spoke of. It looks like they have re-vamped the entire variator system. What rpm's are you running at 65 mph with the malossi variator. 80 miles per tank is horrible. My light comes on at about 120 miles. If 80 is all the malossi get's, I think I will pass on that brand. What did the J Costa do for your Tmax? Did it lower rpm's at freeway speeds? Or did it just about stay the same? That's what I'm looking for. If I can not lower rpm's at 75, then I will buy something else.  :-*

Sissy, I made a calculation mistake. It's about About 140 miles on one tank (12,5 liters).

The Malossi and JCosta both use the same trick and that is that they are at the engines optimal torque. On average that is 1000 rpm above standard setup.
I do not have the impression that the engines suffer but more rpm is obviously more wear.
The Tmax sounds much more nervous though. I may change it to a Malossi in the future.

Thanks, does anyone know how to lower the rpm's? The only heavy-er roller weights I can find are Dr pulley 31 gram weights. Only 1 gram diff. I have heard the new stock X500 weights are 33 gram? Is this true? Kymco usa says they don't know the weight, and can't find out from Kymco Taiwan? Ya right. The roller part numbers are new for both the carb and or fuel ing models. The number is listed as a new replacement part number for all X500's? 33 g would be great, but how would I know?  :-*

Sissy, fyi at 65 mph it does 5500 rpm.

I am expecting a sensitive scale any day now. I will weigh my new rollers, as they are only 1 month old, with about 600km on them.

As you say, heavier rollers are just not out there.

My cheapie solution:

That spacer in between the variator plates, it sits on the inside of the outer plate(with fins). I made one and made it two thirds thinner, and gained about 300-400rpm lower.

Removing the spacer caused a bad rythmic vibration at 120kmh,so this compromise has worked for me.

Also, I filled the center of the rollers with epoxy glue to get extra weight.
Adjustment is possible by drilling a hole in the expoxy, so a sensitive scale is useful here.

I now find at 120kmh,revs are at 6000.
145kmh,7500rpm.

I don't see the point in having a race variator if you plan to alter it that much.
Maybe you're better off with DrPulley sliders? I have some 2822's here who have barely been used. PM me if you 're interested.

Sissymary, the scale arrived!

I weighed my old original rollers that I bought from the agent a year to 2 ago,  and the difference ranges from 32.28gr to 32.88gr.

Well, thats closer to 33 grams then 30? I need a new belt soon, so instead of using the 31 gram Dr P round rollers I bought, I will buy a set of 33gr Kymcos and see how it goes? Thanks. :-*

The rollers are a bit worn, which is why they are not all 33gr.

Good luck. I am going to try Dr pulley sliders. Wrong weight (28gr )I got them cheap, so I will do my epoxy glue hack. With a scale, they should all weigh the same.
