2013 Kymco Like 200i lost power
« on: June 27, 2016, 04:37:32 PM »
Need help please.
After half an hour riding, filled (to bar) gas tank, ten minutes down the road and suddenly lost power and would only go 20 kph (40 kph down hill).Stopped and started engine up again, no problem starting. Drove home, over an hour at that speed and still had no power.
Could keep to 20 kilometers per hour on half throttle but if full throttle tried speed went down.
1900 kilometers on bike, lately adjusted valves myself with you tube video help, rode for two hours after with no issues.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Since it occured shortly after fueling I'm leaning towards some sort of fuel system hang up, but what I don't know. I do know when fueling air pockets form in  the tank. I can rock the bike and it will generally drop the level slightly to add more fuel. Still I don't know why except maybe a a vacuum was created preventing a steady flow of fuel.

Also, check the throttle cable to see if it csan loose at the throttlebody.

Thanks, I'll check throttle connections, learning as I go, will look in manual to see where the throttle body is. Should it have corrected itself if it was a vacuum issue after driving all that way home?  I have not had much help from service shops in the Ottawa area concerning anything to do with this scooter so probably no use asking.
Really appreciate this forum

I would try the simple things first. Get as much of that gas out of your tank, put in fresh gas with a little SeaFoam. I have gotten bad gas from stations before.

It'll have to wait till the weekend now.
Tried when I got home, a little black smoke from the exhaust, seems to be clicking more when running but not sure how much "klick" is normal, still not revving correctly.
I'll check the spark plug, drain the gas and refill and check throttle.
Thanks, I'll update on the weekend.

If you adjusted the valves and now you hear clicking then it would be worth it to open it back up and double check your clearances. Remember, completely cold engine when checking valve clearance. I like to do it in the morning after an overnight sit.

Are there any 'celp' ("Check Engine Lamp") codes blinking after you turn the key to the 'on' position?

Might try the Reset procedure:
Turn the key to the ON position and wait 10 seconds.
5. Fully open the throttle and wait for 10 seconds.
6. Release the throttle so that it is fully closed.
7. After 5 seconds the indicator will blink twice.
8. After the CELP light goes out, the self-diagnosis memory of the ECU is cleared. If the CELP remains lighted, a trouble code is still present.

Is there such a thing as 'bad fuel' at your gas station of choice in Canada?
"Bad fuel" is pretty rare here in the States. (trace water is collected and moved along without much issue here due to the ethanol in our gas)

Thanks,I'll check the valves again.
So, I should reset if the check engine light is on, or do it anyway?
I've never had issues with the gas.

Actually your symptoms are a bit of a stumper....
Kino says : "Checked the valves and ran OK afterwards....now starts OK but runs only at low speed, dies with more throttle....some black smoke ...probably not the gas..."

Did you bump the spark plug cap loose when doing the valve lash check.....did you put back on the vent hose attached to the valve cover....are you certain you had some small 'play' in the rocker arms before adjusting the valves - which indicates  that you were at top-dead-center.....has your adjustment nut/screw combo become loose on the valves... have you washed your scooter and made the airfilter soaking wet by accident....did you over-fill the oil....

Yes, do the reset - takes just a few minutes with key and right hand.

Let us know....
