Doing the rear brakes - an adventure

Ok, so I heard some scraping from the rear when applying the brakes.

Sure enough, immediate action required!

I got ferodo platinum, as they seem to get good reviews.

Getting the calipers off was ok, but the hand brake mechanism made it difficult to really take a good look from all angles, so I took that off, the gasket tearing a bit.

OK, pads totally trashed, one side to the metal.

I see there are two pistons,one with an indented +. Strange, me thinks.

So no worries, out with the screwdriver and I push the one piston in with ease.

The other piston with the +,  now that was fun!

I tried all sorts of maneuvers to get it to go in, but nothing worked.
I am embarrassed to say what I tried.
Luckily I did not break it.. [emoji1]

Eventually, the grey matter started firing, and I found that a screwdriver also worked on this piston, by just screwing the piston in.
This was a revelation to me.

Assembly went well, and all is good  now.

Just some notes.
I saw the rubber boots were perished.
Nothing I could do about that, so I just greased up the rods, and hoped for the best.

It amazes me how nothing ever goes smoothly, always a side issue to be resolved, before the main mission can be accomplished.
Not complaining, since that does not help.
Just an observation.....

Talking about issues,
Last week I wanted to change the oil, but the sump plug would not come undone.
Realizing I will likely have to MacGyver  it off,  I got a new replacement ready for the job.

So today I went ahead, but was stopped dead in my tracks by that Plug refusing to come off.
The 17mm head was stripped already.
Vice grips just made it more round.
I had to chisel it off in the end.

The workshop put that Plug on there so tight, probably with a impact gun, when I had a replacement cam shaft .

Anyways, all ends well and with a nice test drive under the belt, I am smiling.

and I thought I was the only one who had "adventures" when working on my scoot. Nice to know the brake cylinders screw back in. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks very much for posting this info. I just pulled my rear pads out to check the size before buying new ones, no prob getting them out but pushing the pistons back in to give me enough room to get the caliper back on the rotor had me stumped. You saved me a heap of time and trouble...many thanks.
