1st Serviced - query about the oil used.
« on: August 04, 2016, 11:37:59 AM »
I had the first 300 km service for my LIKE 125 today and when talking to the owner of the dealership he stated that they use Polaris PS4 5W-50W oil.    Is this oil suitable for my scooter and with summer coming on in a few months will it handle the high heat we have here.  The manual that I have states to use 15w-40w oil.  Oil viscosities always confuse me.

Does your dipstick smell like a Cod?
Otherwise I think that oil will work just fine....but of course as a true LIKE owner you will be doing your own oil changes much more often than per the manual.  Yes?
It is easy and forms a bond between the two of you!

Others of some repute will tell you to ignore my advice....since I swap out my oil about every 600-750 miles.
I have stopped sleeping at night on the garage floor next to my LIKE200I. ....so, my therapist is encouraged with my progress.

PS:
DO check the dipstick before every ride...once a day...or after every ride.
SOME kind of frequent habit.
Your oil is your second best friend after the Mrs...and before any but THE best dog.
Aircooled engine.....it's all down to that oil.

It's not summer, where you are yet????  My manual recommends 5w50w 4 stroke, which the Polaris is. I would use that , but it is expensive. That oil is fine

Thanks for the replies guys.  Pipster326, I am in Australia and just coming to the end of winter.  Stig, I'll be doing the 1,000km oil change and then it will back to the dealer for the 2,500 service.

You know what Paul? My first oil change was done at 1.200km at the dealer. Because he told me to do so. ("Bring the scooter in at approx. 1.000km...") They refilled  and overfilled with 1 Liter of unknown dutch semisynthetic 10W-40 Oil...
My second oil change I did myself at approx. 5.000km and switched to Castrol high end fullsynth oil 10W-40. And my third oil change will be at 10.000km (still 700km to go). Very happy with the scooter and no complaints. But it does consume a little bit of oil per 1000km (~ 0.2L). But I ride all kind of roads, also Free- and Highways full Throttle.
For moderate climate zones a 10W-40 should be good enough. For hotter climate zones like your Down under, I would suggest that a 50 Grade Oil is better in summer. So a 5W-50 should be perfect for you throughout the whole year. Bear in mind, that the quality of an oil is also determined by the API Rating (written on the backside of the oil bottle). An API Rating from SJ (minimum requirement) onwards (SL, SM, SN) is just fine.
Modern good quality Motoroils should be able to make 5.000km - easily.
And the reason why I use full synthetic engine oil is, because I think that this oil keeps the engine and itself cleaner over a longer period. The gulp of fresh oil every 1000km also kind of helps to keep the oil within specs and is not a problem for me so far.

Yes beermak. Correct.  That would also be my choice. A 5W Oil on a motorcycle is useless anyway unless you have to ride in arctic or antarctic regions...
And down under doesn´t get that cold - as far as I have learned in school  8)

Unfortunately that is what he stated he uses.  Will the 5w do any harm or is it just unnecessary?

The "5"  is  the cold range of this multi range oil....the "50"  is for the other end of thr scale at which this oil protects....the hot range. Or it's the other way round.....having a tall cold Heineken on an empty stomach right now after mowing on a 94° day....can't remember my middle name at this point. "Big Alice" rings a bell.
You are perfectly well covered by this pricey 5/50 oil. "No worries! " we say here in Ohio.

BREAK IN OIL SHOULD BE USED FOR AT LEAST 1600  Km.  the dealer put full syn. oil in at 300 Km.  break-in oil is reg. oil

These days with most of the manufacturers deburring and polishing most of the engine components, break-in oil isn't needed as long.

Again, thank you all for the replies.    For me it's just the worry that goes with a new toy.
