Why do HD riders do that?

I see HD riders ride next to each other in the same lane of a busy four lane blvd at night.
Why do they do that?
There is no room left to dodge even a street-sleeping Raccoon in that formation.
They are surely much better riders than I am.
I'm going to check out the Easy Rider dvd from the library, again, and study up....in the off chance I ever meet another LIKE200i rider when I'm making a Mexican drug buy out west.

I do recall the old episodes of ChiPs on the telly and they rose side by side around swooping bends. It looked cool to a 9 year old back in the day....but to a forty-something it looks like lunacy and definitely not to be encouraged.


Or maybe Harley riders just like to be close to each other as much as possible :-)

They must be going for the "retro look".

I rode a HD for almost 40 years and back in the day we would ride side by side "formation" mostly out west when the roads were empty. Looked bad assed all black on black rolling side by side. We were young dumb and indestructible. Always heard stories of the "bowling alley effect" coming down on a tight pack of riders.

Why anyone would ride like that now is beyond me.
Well excluding young, dumb and indestructible.

CHiPs were ridin' on trailers some of the times! Side by side is insane in modern dynamics. Yeah, sure they are better riders.....spend 10's of thousands on a particular style and ignore practical aspects. The "bagger" look with the huge front wheel and the faired in saddle bags is right in with that "chopper" look in Easy Rider. Some of these creations are real pains to actually ride. That's why you see so many on trailers going to Daytona. I thought the point of two wheels was to RIDE.

Seriously though, all the HD riders had a jamboree in Aviemore (Scotland) at the weekend. It was a fantastic sight, all those campervans.....

I have a few friends who ride Harleys. When they ride solo, they are completely different people than when they are in a pack. Once four or more get together, some kind of transformation seems to happen. Lol
 But Stig, not germane to anything, I want to know what you told that lady to get her to laugh. Sitting here has given me a severe case of the noseys. ---- inbox responses accepted. 😂😂😂😂

When I lived in California on the central coast I had a co-worker who was into sport bikes. He also worked part time as a mechanic at the local Honda shop. At some point he sold his sport bike and bought a Kawasaki KZ750 and installed a Vetter fairing. When I asked him what caused the change in his preference he told me it was due to the "pack" effect when he and his buddies would head out for morning rides to the Big Sur area. They would start out at legal speeds for a while but eventually the would be hauling along at 80-90mph on some of the hairiest roads on the planet with 100 foot drops to the sea. He finally came to the realization the he could DIE if he continued so he dialed it back and got I nice upright touring bike so he could actually SEE the scenery.

I ride like this on whatever bike i'm on, if riding with one other guy. Its called riding abreast.

In all actuality you have to be a proficient rider to do this. What happens is both riders will be able to see obstacles at the same time and will be able to react accordingly.

When in traffic, we can change lanes easier. Basically I got his his one side, he has the other. We are not trying to blast by people, we are just commuting, cruising just like the cars.

Anyways, it does require skill, and is quite enjoyable, because 2 people are riding like one.
