First Oil change weird discovery

Scion owners report foing their first DIY oil change...then putting in four qts and finding oil massively overfilled....because they had drained tranny fluid.

1. My nephew had an early 80's Mustang. He was trying to do his own oil change He called me wondering why the oil would not go down into the engine but ran over instead. After a little back and forth. I discovered that he had removed the air filter and was pouring oil into the carburetor. No permanent damage. But My brother had to replace the plugs and rebuild the carburetor.
2. My sister in law called because while  adding water to the radiator, she noticed that it seemed to take too much water . She suspected that she MAY have added it to the wrong place. YEP! Right into the crankcase where you add the oil![emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]. Thankfully, she did not attempt to start it up

Both true stories.
I had to hold back my laughter instinct since I didn't want to cause my brother problems trying to justify to his wife his baby brother's uncontrollable laughter.

But my nephew was fair game. He tried to blame me because earlier he had called me asking where to add the oil. I told him to remove the cap on the top of the engine. Well, the air filter housing was the highest point, but I thought that common sense would have told him... Oh well... He was only 20 or so then.

Thanks for the replys....I don't believe anything major happened either at this point...it seems to be running real good ....I don't want to jinx myself so I'll leave it at that...lol.  I will however take a look at the air filter and replace it if needed. By the way...what's this puke tube ya'll talking about? Lol.

The tube can be found at; http://www.kymcopartsmonster.com/pages/OemParts?aribrand=KYM#/Kymco_USA/BA50AB_People_S_250/Air_Cleaner/2K03080005/2K03080077   It is part 95003 on the diagram. The bottom has a cap that can be taken off and any excess oil can be drained.

Thanks for the info on the puke tube... should this be drained regularly? I'm hearing some kind of noise coming from the engine/tranny area..some say it's the reed valve? Not sure but it sounds kinda weird.... hear it when accelerating mostly. Not sure if this puke tube is related or not but maybe something isn't breathing correctly or maybe this reed valve needs more room for expanding? Lol I have no idea...

"Puke tube should be checked/drained just at the regular oil change interval. The tube is usually transparent so a visual inspection is all that is needed. Did you check your air filter? The excess oil could have gotten sucked up there blocking your air filter. As far as the noise, in my opinion sometimes when we look for problems, we will find them. Whether they are there or not. If the scooter is running well, all should be good. Every machine has its own "character" and part of that is noises. I have almost tore down a complete CVT drive looking for a noise that turned out to be a loose muffler heat shield bolt! Best way to isolate noise is to place the scooter on the center stand, make sure the rear wheel stays off the ground, and run it up to RPM. You can then walk around and see exactly where the noise is coming from. (Yes, I have long arms ) I suspect its probably nothing to worry about.

Did not disconnect the battery.
Blew a fuse.
Radio worked...car wouldn't.
Took my mechanic all afternoon to discover the boys had moved a fuse to fix the radio.
Pulled it from EFI system....and never thought to mention this to Pop.

Oldest son and his buddy were installing stereo into his sweet Auidi 4000S.
Did not disconnect the battery.
Blew a fuse.
Radio worked...car wouldn't.
Took my mechanic all afternoon to discover the boys had moved a fuse to fix the radio.
Pulled it from EFI system....and never thought to mention this to Pop.

In an unrelated event, I had a customer get his buddy to  tow a Ford Aerostar mini-van over 70 miles to my dad's shop. The buddy used an old BMW 325 (I think) 5 speed. Burned up his clutch. I pushed it on the lift , tried it,and it started and ran for a minute. I looked up at the overhead console, pressed the button and  noticed the trip computer said distance to empty 0 miles. I put a gallon of gas in it. And it started. We both were aware that his fuel gauge didn't work. But the trip computer did. But he had NEVER noticed the trip computer overhead because it had always been set to the compass function.

His excuse, " I thought I'd filled it up all the way before I left ______"
He swore me to secrecy . I think he FINALLY told his buddy and helped him with the clutch repair bill. But I don't know if he EVER told his wife.
20+ years later, his son did something similar and towed his car to me. I thought the statute of limitations was over. So I shared the story with his son. He called me and jokingly  got on my case for letting the cat out the bag. Lol.
