Need to keep my hands warm this winter..
« on: September 07, 2016, 11:52:40 PM »
Hello everyone. I am getting prepared for winter here in N. Georgia. I ride in practically all weather, except ice. Last year my coldest commute was 17 degrees Fahrenheit.  The biggest challenge I have is keeping my hands warm.  Last year I put heated grips on my People 150 and wore Army surplus mittens with liner gloves. This worked fairly well but my thumbs occasionally would still get cold and uncomfortable. I am considering some battery powered rechargeable gloves because I can wear them with whatever I ride and they do not require re-wiring or a drain  the charging system. Anyone have any ideas on a good, affordable, pair of gloves for me? Or is there another suggestion to solve my cold hand issues?

For two winters I have been wearing glove liners from GERBING which contain rechargeable batteries, with a leather motorcycle gauntlet over them.
Coldest ride was 3°F so far here in Ohio.
These glove liners have 3 heat settings - I generally ride on the middle, of lowest setting.
Rechargeable at night.
Not inexpensive - but have kept me riding comfortably on midwestern winter days. On sale!!

I picked up some Joe Rocket battery powered ones, but honestly don't recommend 'em.
Don't get me wrong.  The gloves are OK, or rather the second set is.
Dealing with Joe Rocket for the RMA on the first, defective, pair was a long drawn out nightmare of bad communication, obfuscation, & bureaucratic BS.
Basically my Amazon vendor was pretty minimally helpful, so pretty marginal, & Joe Rocket was horrid.

That said, battery gloves are great, but limited by the battery, so for my commute of ~10-20 min they do OK, but for anything much longer than an hour I'd take a hard look at something wired if your electrical system will support 'em (Most do).

Cyclegear has a 101 set that comes with a heat controller for an OK price if ya catch 'em at the right time.  Haven't used 'em but they do review OK.

Given that there is a ciggy lighter socket on the Downtown (!), I'm interested to hear if are there any heated gloves that plug into that?

Seems these outlets blow at anything above a tiny bit of draw. No way would they handle the draw of heated anything, including a cigarette lighter. They are for cell phones only, I think. Maybe > can't find my rear end or my way home devices.
Pretty much anything else blows the fuses.

I ride with bar muffs every winter.. yes you do look a little silly BUT they keep your hands warm and dry.
They are cheap (The ones i use are £12 = $15.92USD) and easy enough to take on and off your scoot.

I just wear my summer gloves all year round with the muffs on.

I know these work for a lot of people. ....but I found they did not work in Ohio winter temps. ...a nd found that they were dangerously awkward in city riding with my big hands.
Put them away as a failed experience.

That is one of the best ways to precisely locate a shorted or grounded wire. Never fails. Lol.

I too tried the muffs.  For me they proved to be too dangerous to use also. It was too distracting trying to get my hands back in while moving after lifting my visor, itching my nose, etc. I know they work for some folks, just not for me.
