Should I worry about this tire?

So yesterday I went to my local gas station to fill up the air on my tires.  When I went to plug the nozzle onto my air valve, it never properly latched on so basically it started to drain air out of my tire.  The more I tried to get the nuzzle onto the valve, the more the air would release.  By the time I figured the thing was broken, my tire was down to 18 PSI down from 28 PSI.

I ended up having to drive my bike the next block over to the other gas station to use their air pump.  I managed to pump my tire back to the recommended 32 PSI.

This morning, I went to check my tire and noticed this.  Is this something I should worry about?  Did this happen because I drove on a fairly flat tire?  Or has this been there for awhile now?  I don't think my tires are in need of replacing just yet but this part of the tire worries me.  It's only this little strip the rest of the tire is normal.  My bike has roughly 5200 miles on it. 

I'm paranoid now that my tire will blow while I am on the freeway.  Should I just have it replaced?

REPLACE that tire!!!! That just didn't happen, from driving with low air. That has happened over time. I wouldn't even drive it anywhere, to get it replaced. It's definitely not safe to drive , when the steel belts are showing. Take the whole rim and tire off, and have a new tire mounted.

Get it replaced as soon as possible. The tyre has worn way past the tread and is down to the ply layers.

It seems the wear pattern is related to a combination of highway riding and over-inflated tyres. Try a lower pressure such as 27-28 psi, not 32 psi as to increase the contact patch, especially if your are not carrying any passengers. My rear tyre (Pirelli Diabls) have lasted nearly 20,000km and my commute is 90% highway.

took it to my dealer, had to pay $90 for the tire and another $90 to install it.  Seems expensive but I guess I was desperate.

Kind of surprised the original tire only lasted 5000 miles.  Oh well.

Yes, the original MAXXIS MA-PRO tires had terrible mileage.

Agreed re maxxis types. Mine developed cracks across from side to side, and I really felt unsafe on them.
Michelin city Tyre is the way to go.

I dont know my stock tires service millage (I thing i have had the Kenda) as i replaced them after 2-3 k miles for some higher end tires (Dunloops) which greatly improved traction.

Do you have ABS on your DT? As this type of wear (only on a part of the tire) suggests prolonged breaking (probbably from great speed) with the wheel fully stopped and the tire skidding.

  my  first set of tires looked the same as yours at 8,000 miles,. from rubber too tread within 60 miles

NO!
That tire will not be a danger to anyone with the scooter on the center stand....just don't let it touch the ground on the side stand ---or by riding on it.

4500km means the tyre wear is usually low (i.e. plenty of tread left), but older tyres lose their flexiblity and strength since the rubber reacts with oxygen in the air. Cracks in the sidewall is a symptom of ageing rubber. The sidewall is critical to the tyre and the tyre should be replaced.

I had the same issue with my tires. Low miles, but they were 3-4 years old and developed cracks on the side walls. I would replace them ASAP!!!
