Stay away from them. Really bad ratings. My wife had to deal with them when one of their insured hit her. It took two months before they would have her car fixed and give her a rental. They never return calls. They make empty promises. They even tried to have my wife take pictures of the accident damage of both cars expecting her to contact the guilty party. You be wise to stay clear of them.

Thanks for the heads up.

"Thanks for your reply. I'm 59. I just recalculated on Progressive with minimum coverage and am now getting $334. I wonder if it's because I just got my license and have no riding experience?"

Experience on the scooter had no effect on my rate. Sounds like Geico is just too high. For what its worth, I have mine through Auto-Owners. BTW, I am 57. I have liability only. I have a Honda Helix and a Kymco People 150. Each one are 10 bucks a month for me.

Great information. Thanks very much.

Check with State Farm, Allstate or any other mutual company. Progressive is not a mutual insurance company and their rates will always be higher. All they have is Flo. We have Allstate and pay about $350 a year for two 300cc scoots. We are 76 and 69 respectively.

Karl

Thanks for this. I had heard the exact opposite so this is good to know. I had heard something to the effect that the big companies were not terribly interested in being competitive in the motorcycle market.

Rates are also affected by what state you live in. In NJ, I have Rider Insurance and they deal only with motorcycle policies, so their rates are generally better than the big box insurance companies.

Interesting. Thanks. If I'm reading correctly, I think Crossbolt's post here seems to take a different position on the large insurers.

comparing insurance premiums on internet forums is a futile wasted effort, state laws are different, every zip code has a different risk associated with it

in my rural area, full coverage 250k/500k/100k liability, same coverage on UM, 10k med payments, ACV on comprehensive and $100 ded on collision on a 1000cc motorcycle is less than $200/year, someone with the same driving record 50 miles away in a metropolitan area will pay 10 times as much

Fascinating. Thanks.

Thanks, everyone. I responded individually to several of your posts but they didn't post for some reason. I was going to ask a moderator if they knew why but I can't seem to find moderators in the member search.

Something to keep in mind vs. all the varied responses.
Insurance requirements, & rates vary wildly by area due to various laws, & actual claims.
My coverage is pretty cheap, but insurance is not mandatory in WA, so that keeps it down a bit.
By contrast I believe MN requires PIP, which is nifty, but very expensive, so the cost there will be a lot higher than what we consider to be minimum coverage here.

Similar to my experience with Dairyland. They usually cover high-risk drivers, like the idiot who totaled my P150, who was on his 3rd DUI. Our own insurance agent had to really get on their case and go to bat for us to get anything done. Took about 2 months to settle up for us also, like TroutBum said. Steer clear of Dairyland.

I have Geico, and pay $340, for a 2012 Downtowm 300i and 2008 Lance Venice . I also live in NJ, where we have one of the highest, if not the highest, insurance premiums in the country. Does your car insurer offer motocycle coverage? Sometimes you get a discount for having both.

I live in Iowa, 50 yrs old, clean record and pay $80  / yr for liability with higher coverage amounts on 2010 S200. Added in a 2014 Ninja 300 and it bumped the total up $20 to $100/yr for both.

I got my scooter coverage when I only had a permit..they never asked about a motorcycle license.

Paid £112 ($130?) for full comprehensive on a 125cc chopper style bike.
I get, fire, stolen, vandalism, crash and rescue cover. Courtesy bike/car, adequate 2nd and 3rd party cover, helmet/leathers cover, EU countries riding and rescue, (4 weeks) very pleased as I have zero no claims bonus!
Aged 50, had bike licence since 17, but only just got back on 2 wheels.

I will be shopping rates soon. My insurance for 2 Likes, is going up to $1100.00 annually. That is $300k liability, plus comp and collision. I live in the hit and run capital of the country. Ridiculous.

Reason why UK prices are lower, is because some of the effects of an accident, ie me putting another in hospital, is already covered by other mandatory taxes.
The UK and US taxation and health services are very different, but people from both countries pay a similar sum when its all added up.
I could pay more insurance for my 125...had quotes of over £450, but ofcourse opted for the fully packaged one at £112.
A Yamaha 600 Diversion would cost another £40!
We have a thing called Council Tax here. Its local level tax for bin empties, road repairs and a number of other things. The councils keep cutting services, but not the Council Tax....Hmmm!

I have USAA auto coverage. They advertise for motorcycle insurance but when I did the necessary clicks of my mouse I was taken to the Progressive site. I didn't see any evidence that there was any collaborative relationship that would result in any reduced premium.
