Are they still doing E-Checks in your area?
« on: October 28, 2016, 11:04:34 AM »
Folks idling  their cars here in Tim Horton's parking lot are trying to kill me as I sit on the patio...now that they stopped  requiring regular polution checks on cars around here.
Are they still doing E-Checks in other states? How about scoots and bikes....do those get checked?
We had them for cars/trucks....then they stopped.

Had 'em years ago in Memphis. Cost each driver 20 bucks to have the tests done to get the little tax sticker for the lower left corner of the windshield. Only a third of the equipment worked but they would go through their act as if it was working. I think the city gave it up since the joke became very public. Glad I no longer live there. They did not test motorcycles.

Never heard of it or seen it in Texas.
In order to renew your license you had to obtain a certificate from a State E-check center.

The procedure:
1) They put a sniffer up you tail pipe and put you on a rolling road and made you run at different speeds.
2) They also would look up your trouser leg, with a mirror on a stick,  to make certain that you had a converter in there.
3) If you passed 1 & 2..... they'd ask you which car was yours and then they'd smell the gas cap for leaking fumes.

The whole thing was pretty humiliating......
I don't miss it.

It was also a transportation killer for poor folks.
If your clunker failed you had to take it to a certified garage and spend a few hundred $ in an attempt to get it cleaned up. If it failed a few times & you had spent enough $, they'd finally give you a pass - maybe.
People would keep buying temp tags, or buy a junker out of the county, to get around it.

It did get some badly polluting cars off of the roads.
Still no safety checks in the area - so we have some pretty sporty cars coming at you ....sort of crabbing down the road.

Still doing it on cars around here, not on bikes though.
If they did I think the burger would pass.  The Kymco notsomuch.

I believe they've ended it a few places since they found it was ineffective these days since most of the real bad smog-machines from the 70's & earlier are done for, & all the basically bandaged with bad anti-smog stuff machines from the 80's have blown up.
There are more older cars kicking around here, but they don't smog 'em after 25 years anyway, which brings us to 1991, so it probably doesn't do much around here anymore either, but considering how the politics run around here (google "Henry Yesler" some time for an idea) I doubt it'll disappear as long as somebody's brother in law has a chance of bilking more out of us for essentially nothing.

Had to do it on my vehicles when I lived in the Atlanta area but not on the bikes.  Not required on anything here in Alabama.

Smog check every two years for cars over 5 year's old. Sniffer in tailpipe. Cars computer check. Gas cap test. Checked for missing equipment. No registration without it. Unsure about bikes. It is easy to find someone to pass a car if the price is right.
They haven't done the safety inspections for decades now.

A "Drive Clean" or E-Check is mandatory on all cars and trucks in Ontario that are over 5 years every two years to get your validation sticker. Dumbest idea ever as I have only seen a handful of vehicles that truly fail the test i over 12 years in a shop. I've seen cars that would fail  safety and should not be on the road but it passes drive clean so its good to go.
Motorcycles and scooters are exempt from the test.

Still have to do them on all cars & trucks in Idaho (at least the bigger counties), but not on scooters & motorcycles. If a cop stops you they will ask for "driver's license, registration, proof of insurance, and emissions testing". Dang, now I gotta remember where I put all 4 pieces of paper...  "Pardon me, officer, whilst I root around in the glove box for the next 15 minutes....." :P

The upside is you might find that long lost Moon Pie which went missing in the late 80's.
Vintage M.Pies are fetching good $$ on eBay.
I made a house payment with an 11" French fry from McDonald's.

On cars for a few years in EU countries, Motorbikes too next year! Probably to do with the green global agreements to save the planet. But also another excuse to slap another bit of tax on you!
