Severed right rearview mirror... advice on repair?
« on: November 17, 2016, 09:32:24 PM »
Took a little spill on wet leaves just leaving my street and that was all it took for a broken right mirror. The pictures tell the story. (Scroll sideways to see all 3.)

Anyone with experience repairing this on their own? Would love to know how to save some bucks.

On another, more disconcerting note, the scooter's not starting now…

Glad to hear you're all right, even it was a minor crash. I have a feeling your repairs may be costly given how the GV mirrors are designed to fold up. The left front turn signal on my Downtown located in the mirror went out a few months ago, and that was pricey to replace.

Wish I could say why your bike's not starting. Any chance you batter was disconnected, or something is lose or out of alignment with your spark plug?

check the kill switch like bounce it up and down the front end of coarse,.  there is a kill switch that works if you lay the bike down on its side , on the downtown it is over the horn, dead center of the bike,.

My go-to repair for things like that is good old JB weld epoxy. It it cant fix it, you need to get OEM replacement parts.

I used Q-BOND www.qbond.net when I dropped my grand dink (gv to you) twice on same mirror within 1 hour.
It consists of powder and super glue. The powder can be filed into shape after it sets (30 seconds)

Thanks to all for your insight and suggestions!

The part that broke (aside from the 2 wires) is plastic so the Q-bond sounds like the best bet.

It's not even trickle-charging though, so ... what does that mean? It's not down to the severed mirror wires, is it? Like to complete a circuit or something? (Obviously I'm pretty ignorant in these matters.) I wouldn't expect that to be the case. Maybe I'll try taping them back together and see if that does anything for charging/starting.

(And Scooterwolf, good idea; I'll check battery connection now. Not clear on sparkplug location but can check my manual.)

Such a bummer, the bike was just out of the shop a few weeks ago and running perfectly... : (

Whew -- the bike finally got fully charged and starts. So it appears it's just a matter of mirror repair now.

Surprised NAPA didn't have Q-bond; maybe I'll have to step into WalMart.

Glad to hear you're back to riding. Yeah, pretty odd if it was somehow connected to your mirror. Maybe it's a design flaw?

Just to provide a not very satisfactory end to this story:

I stripped the housing off the severed wires, about 1/2'' or so, which was a challenge for the small ends down inside the mirror body. (Used utility knife for that since my electrician pliers wouldn't fit down there.)

I then hammered the broken and bent out circular piece back in so it was flush with the 'framing'. This involved shaving off some of the framing to make it fit back in (with utility knife). No plastic bonder seems to be needed 'cause it's so tight.

Then I butt-jointed the wires back together and did my best to crimp them with pliers -- again quite difficult for the small wire ends down inside the housing.

Alas, it doesn't work! The left mirror still functions but the right one's destined to be in permanently open position. Oh well. I saved $150 parts+labor in just reattaching it. Guess I'll make an ebay alert for a functioning one and someday get it back to its James Bondian coolness level.

Thanks Wolf. I wish I could figure out that site though! Can't seem to complete a search, and selecting Grand Dink 250 in the 'all webshop' sidebar area doesn't seem to lead anywhere. Any advice on how to find mirrors for my GV 250?

On another, minor note, now my bike's not holding charge nor even making an attempt to start. Oy. I need to look at the battery...

These sites may help,

http://www.kymcopartsmonster.com/

http://kymcopartsonline.com/catalog/

http://www.chaparral-racing.com/kymco-scooter-parts

Wish I could say what's wrong with the electrical part, but the battery sounds like a good place to star.

Thanks, Wolf. Will check 'em out.

Seems to be have charged now. I think (hope) it's just that my trickle charger is getting more fussy about how it's connected.

Hope the charge holds, and you’re able to get some riding time before things get to cold or icy.

Ride safe,

I have repaired my mirrors many many times.  As a rule I always close them when I park.  Just glue it open and glue in a mirror.  You can fill gaps with poly foam like Great Stuff brand or a waterbased product.  Disconnect the power cord.  Other mirror will work perfect.  On line the mirror is ~ $100+ s&h.  At my local dealer I was charged shipping and it cost $180 OTD!!  So it pays to repair.  Also, even if you buy a new or used mirror ALWAYS save the old repaired mirror for spare parts.
