What was your first new one ??
« on: February 11, 2017, 04:35:21 AM »
What was your first (new or used) 2 wheel ride? The year, model, price, and picture if you can remember?

I disliked the high cost of automobile ownership which my friends seemed constantly burdened with, so - this was our fist motorized transportation.
Purchased new in 1967 for $230 OTD.
S90 Honda in white/silver livery.
Wife added some vinyl flowers ....and I kept the oil changed. Cruised comfortably @ 45/50MPH, 2-up, @ 100 MPG. Nice 18" tires. @150 miles on a $.50 tank of GULF gas.
We rode that thing 2-up all over New England. Went to dinner on it; shopping, including a Xmas tree.  I commuted to work on it all winter - roads permitting, until Uncle Sam sent me an invite around Xmas.
The experience with this little Honda inspired me to own 3 more Honda 2 wheelers over the next few decades.
No Honda ever put a foot wrong for me. (one flat tire -- my fault)

Fantastic find! Fantastic bike! Fantastic manufacturer! Taught us all how to build good stuff that lasts a long time. 1960 Honda Hawk 250 (domestic), 4-speed transmission. I will go look for pictures now.

Not my first bike but my first new out the door, an international orange Tohatsu Trailmaster. It had 50cc 5.5 bhp two stroke engine and a changeable rear sprocket set up for off road riding. They still produce outboards today.

I came late to the 2-wheel game, so my first was the 2007 People 150 in my signature line. Silver, Prima medium windscreen, ScootRLogic Topcase, bought it used in 2013 for $1600 at our local scooter shop. Loved that scooter! Such a good machine! I only had it 6 months before it was totaled.  >:(

The first totally new scooter is my current Lance (SYM) PCH 150. Matte black/silver; moved all the accessories from the P150 over to the PCH; new price off the showroom floor was $2300 OTD. It has also been a very solid ride, but I sure miss the 16" wheel on the People (PCH has 12" wheels). Either way, I'm blessed just to be riding.

My first was a new 1987 Honda Helix in Candy Red. I miss her. And my second was a 1986 Honda Helix in white which I bought because it was a deal too good to pass up despite still having the red '87.

Have seen  a faded red one of these at local gas station a couple of times. Never had a chance to talk with the owner.Seems to be  running OK.
What was the OTD price in 1987? Every so often Honda seems to let the design dept. off of the leash, with a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black on the  conference  table!

What was the OTD price in 1987?

Actually according to my sales contract (yes I still have it) I bought it on 23rd July, 1988 and the OTD price was $3,634.69 ($196.32 sales tax, $250 in accessories, $25 document fee, $73 license fee, and $93.37 for insurance). It had 3 miles on it at delivery.

My 1986 I bought on the 22nd of Sept, 1989 (and yes I have the original sales contract also) and the OTD price was $2,529.38 ($25 document fee, $139.38 sales tax, and $67 in license fee).

My first ever two wheel vehicle was a 1952 Simplex. I got it from my grand father on my 14th birthday. All the boys where I lived were getting Cushman and AllState scooters and I wanted one.
My grand father, being an old motorcycle rider, would not buy me a "puddle jumper", as he called them. So off we went to the Harley Davidson shop, in Memphis, were I fell in love with a used 125 Hummer. The dealer was selling Simplex "motorcycles", as a side line.. Anyway grand dad bought me a '52 Maroon Simplex with a 5 hp 2 stroke and centrifugal clutch. He also bought himself an older model that had the same engine with centrifugal clutch, but it also had a derailie type pulley set up
where you could shift to a higher speed belt ratio. However his was never  as fast as mine and he spent more time putting the belts back on the pulleys than he did riding. Was a fun little bike that was faster on take off, faster on top end, and attracted more girls than did the scooters. Mac

Guess we could say dear ole grand dad knew what he was doing. His first and only motorcycle was a 20's some thing, Excelsior Super X, 45 ci V twin, three speed gear mixer, leading link springer forks, hard tail frame with spring seat and gas tank mounted speedometer. Bore a very close resemblance to the 1928 Harley Davidson JD28. My dad had a Famous James in the late 40's. Don't remember much about it, except it was about the size of a Schwinn Sting Ray. I still have part of the tool kit that came with the James. As you can see, biking has run in my family for a long time and as Hank Jr. said, "It's just a family tradition", and I've carried it on for the past 62 years. Life is good.

My first two wheeled bike was a Sears El Tigre minibike back in 1975. I saved up from a paper route I had. My second two wheeled bike was in late 1977. I graduated high school that year and my parents were moving north/east of Sacramento and I wasn't. I needed transportation so my folks took me to Emory's Honda in San Jose where I purchased a CB750F. Man I loved that bike.

My first one: a French made  VELOSOLEX 50 cc year 1971, front motor.  Price: it's hard to remember. I keep one picture.

Before March of 2010, I never rode two wheels other than a bicycle. My first motor two wheel bike was a 50cc JonWay scooter. I knew nothing about them. However, I needed my own transportation to get around Vegas. Being from NYC, mass transit stinks here. The bike cost me $650 in change. Little did I know how much more this was gonna cost me to maintain it. I sold the Jonway seven months later for $400. I was happy to get rid of it with all the problems that came with it.

My second bike was a Roketa 50cc scooter. This lasted for 2 years until it finally broke down. I got rid of it just in the nick of time. My pops wanted me to get a better bike. We finally decided to get a Kymco Agility 125cc scooter. This was in December of 2012. The rest as they say is history. I have been very happy with her. The battery lasted for four years before I got a new gel battery for $25 in change. The next thing I need to get for her is a new drivebelt. Of course Kymco is a Honda which means this will last forever. I love her more than I love my car.

We had the annual Vegas HighRollers Weekend Scooter here last weekend 2-23-17 to 2-27-17 and I saw two of those Honda Helix at the rally. They were the vintage 250cc maxi scooters of course. We even had an Aprilla 300cc custom scooter from Vancouver B.C. join us. Those are some sweet bikes.
