Like 200i as well made as Agility 50?
« on: March 12, 2017, 08:48:46 PM »
After years of lurking, this is my first post!

I currently have an 07 Kymco Agility 50 that has 20500km on the clock.  I ride it to work year 'round in New England weather, and it has proved to be a very reliable, durable scooter with minimal routine maintenance.

I will most likely be moving soon, further away from work, so I'll need something a little faster than my AG.  The Like 200I fits the bill.  My favorite dealer, some miles away, also has a Movie 150, new, still in a box.  That's also tempting.  I did not contact them yet, so I don't know the price, but I got a great deal on a leftover KLR from them last year.

I'm leaning towards the like because its got EFI, and I ride in the cold a lot.  I'm wondering if the quality is as good as my Agility, or even better?  I'm sure the Taiwanese Movie is higher quality than both, but it's carbed.  I had a Buddy 170I a few years ago, and loved the EFI on that.

Any thoughts you experienced Likers have would be great.
Thanks!

Like is made in mainland China.  Buddy is made in Taiwan.  I've owned both.  Found the Buddy fit, finish and overall quality superior to that of the Like.  Sit on a Like and take it for a nice long ride before pulling the trigger.  Ergonomics of this scooter are interesting.

Ooty's Scooters in Santa Barbara is a SYM, Kymco and Genuine Dealer. This is what Chris, the owner had to say on the Sym forum when this same topic came up:

"Kymco Like and Agility metallurgy from China, Lance/SYM from Taiwan. Having rebuilt, torn down, re-assembled, and thoroughly gone through many , many engines I would have to say that the cheap Chinese bikes have poor metal quality, with porous castings, next better is the Kymco Like, followed by the Agility, then the Lance. As far as Taiwan builds, Kymco and SYM are similar, PGO is a step better.
This thread being about Lance dealerships, I would say that I am very pleased with the product - especially the PCH - SYM quality throughout. "

To summarize: Dealer/mechanic puts the Like one small tick above the average Chinese scooter.
Less chit chat, more riding.

Welcome thumper,
I just finished several fun hours on a 22 degree garage floor here in Ohio, putting my newly shod rear wheel back on my 2012 LIKE200i (you do not have to remove the headlight after all, just everything else....because it's a scooter )

.....and was thinking seriously that, if I was able to get up again, I was going to go in the house and give the fit and finish of this Chinese Kymco LIKE200i an "attaboy !" Really, I was thinking that. You take stuff apart and it goes back together with no drama from poor machining, etc. It ain't a Vespa, but it ain't half bad.

A LIKE200i is slower than a Buddy 170, and probably no faster than any other 150 Kymco - maybe even slower WOT than the Kymco 150's. For 4 years I have not ridden my 2012 LIKE200i WOT, but it is a good running 45-50mph scooter. It is NOT a 60mph freeway capable scooter, no matter what the salesman says. !!

I love my LIKE200i. It is dead easy to service (mostly)...the EFI is superb - even at 3 degrees at 5:30AM commuting year around to work. I had a throttle body play up 3 yrs ago, replaced under warranty - but even then it never failed to start or interfere with my daily work commute. Bought it new 4 yrs and 12,000 miles ago....nothing has come bouncing off, yet.

A reliable left-over LIKE200i could be a good choice ---- at the right discounted price. Goodness knows there are plenty new and lightly used ones around.

Any SYM's around ? probably much more $ than a left-over LIKE200i.

Kinda tired, but hope I've answered some of your questions.
Read a bunch from the LIKE200i area to see more of our thoughts and fixes.

I never sat on a Agility and never rode it, but I can say a few words about the Like.  :) In general I would like to agree on what Stig already wrote here about the Like. But I also think that the Taiwan made scooters (Sym etc.) are indeed a bit better in quality- generally.
But on the other hand I would say that the chinese made Like is way good enough for our purposes.

Here are my thoughts and experiences and my issues with the Like (2013 model with 2014 registration, now 10.600km):

- Clock/Date display went bad in the first 6 month - was replaced under warranty. Clock since then works, date still weird and wrong sometimes. I don´t care anymore.

- One bolt to the engine of the rear fork broke within the first months of ownership. Was bored out and replaced under warranty. But because I didn´t trust these 6mm bolts there I just bored the threads out once more with a 8mm drill and put 2 new halfway threaded 8mm bolts through and torqued them with washers and locknuts on the backside. So these 2 bolts will never ever break or come loose again. Guaranteed.

- The bolt of the starter motors green ground cable came loose and got lost one day after the first few month. Was replaced under warranty and loctiteed in. Never came loose again since. I would recommend this as a precaution to every owner.

- Didn´t trust the reliability of the chinese oem battery and therefore put in a Shido LiFePo. Lightweight, strong, maintanancefree and reliable battery. Maybe not perfectly ideal for heavy duty winterriders though. But I am not.

- Kenda tires are of questionable quality (out of round...wetgrip...but at least long lasting with good milage) and are not balanced by factory. I would recommed to change these soon or at least get them balanced and centered under warranty by the dealer.

- Pretty hard and tough sporty suspension. Front and back. Might get a bit better with different/new tires also.

- Seat is really of poor quality. Too soft and too weak. Not really comfortable especially for longer rides. Upholstering could be a good thing and helpful improvement.

- Selfglaring effect of the headlight during nightrides. Can be solved with a tape attached on the upper part of the headlight.

- 12V outlet is fused with 0.8 Amps only. What a joke nowadays! To replace with a stronger fuse, you have to dismantle half of the scooter...

- Brake fluid reservoir is underneath the handlebar cover. Maybe good against manipulation, but bad for easy maintanance.

Apart from that, good and reliable scooter. Low empty weight, low fuel consumption. Easy, cheap general maintanance, nice design.
One more great advantage of this scooter are the strong disc brakes front and rear. I love them. Wouldn´t want to buy a scooter with rear drumb brakes. Therefore I like my Like pretty much so far, but I probably wouldn´t by it again new. I´d rather wait and buy the new Like model coming for 2017/2018.
Kymco gave the new Like some very interesting and useful improvements as well as new features.

So as Stig wrote, if you can get a discounted leftover or lightly used one for relatively little money, I would consider it as a pretty good deal.
And if you have the possibility, do a few testrides with different scooters. So you will see and feel what fits best for your needs.
Cheers,
Robo

Thumper,
You are aware that the LIKE200i is a 163cc scooter, yes ?

I too have a Kymco scooter and a KLR.  I hope the Kymco is as much fun as the KLR.

I have had my Like 200i now for nearly 5 years and over 14,000 miles. In that time issues that have popped up were:

2 bad OEM batteries, dealer replaced under warranty and finally gave up and handed me a Yuasa battery that has been going strong the last 4 years,
1 airbox screw went missing. Since then made it a habit to check nuts, bolts and screws with every service,
1 bad oil seal behind the variator replaced under warranty,
bolt holding power cable to starter motor vibrated loose causing intermittent run/stale/stop issues. Stig sent me a replacement bolt and it has worked flawlessly every since.

The scooter averages 80 mpg, WOT is 60 to 63 mph per GPS app, seating for me hasn't been an issue, but I am 5'9". You get a lot of bang for the buck with this scooter.

I test rode a Buddy 170 and found the scooter to be smallish. I prefer a floorboard with more real estate and found the floorboard on the buddy to be cramped. YMMV I also wasn't keen on the placement of the oil cooler. It seems vulnerable where it resides. Some components are cheap. Take a look at the hand grips. Ugliest, cheapest grips I've every seen.

Thanks for the replies, great input.

I don't think anything can be more fun than a KLR!  But for around town practicality I do love a scooter.

I do know that the Like 200i is a 163cc, which I find as annoying as everyone else.

I sold the Buddy 170i because while it is tiny (which I liked) it rode terribly on those itty bitty wheels.  My AG handled the same bumps better than the Buddy.  We have terrible potholes and bumps here, especially this time of year.

I think I'm going to find out how much they want for that Movie 150.

If you felt uncomfortable on the buddy on bumpy rotten roads with potholes, then you will need definately something similar to a KLR. You won´t be happy with the Like neither. It´s suspension is pretty hard and tough and combined with the relatively small wheels and the lousy soft foam factory seat for sure not the best choice for bad roads.
I know what I am talking about. Over here in Europe we too have very many bad roads in a disastrous shape with potholes, cracks, bitumen repairs, wheel ruts, cobbled streets and so on and so forth. Terrible I can tell you. Especially in the urban aereas/cities. Maybe thats why there are more and more SUVs showing up on the streets...
And the Like is only real fun to ride on smooth and well paved flat asphalt roads.
I have the comparision, because prior to the Like in 2014 I owned a Honda Transalp 600VX for 15 years and 40.000miles. Second to none.
Cheers,
Robo
