Oops, guess what I found?
« on: April 10, 2017, 01:54:57 PM »
Yesterday changed oil and filter and final drive fluid in the SW. Guess what showed up in the bottom of the oil pan.....After the job was completed?  Geez, what an idiot. Not sure Kymco uses these too but seems like most scooters do? This is the one behind the oil plug/nut. How critical is it not to have it installed or should I drain/save oil and install this little jewell?

The MyRoad uses one. I'd put it back in anyway.

If the drain plug is on the side of the motor simply have someone hold the bike for you, lean it WAAAAAAY over so the oil won't run out and re-install it.  If it's on the bottom you're outta luck.

I saw Red Green handle something like this situation:
Drain plug on his truck was rounded off, so he pried out the engine, with some difficulty,  took off the oil fill cap and flipped over the engine to get the oil out.
All you need is some rope, a tree, some pulleys and some real dumb neighbor kids. With scoot hanging by its tires, remove drain cap and toss the screen in.
You're  welcome.
Take pix please....

Please explain WHY there would be a strainer on the OIL DRAIN. I know there are some configured without a filter that  have a screen and a big spring like in MJR's picture but that would not be the drain. Drains on most Kymcos are an17 mm bolt with an aluminum gasket/washer.

I would put it back.It helps to catch any metal pieces that might be floating around in your oil.and dirt.

Since I need more bonding time with my SW, I'll drop the oil and save to re- install. Kinda thought it ought to go back in too, the midget filter screen that is. What Doo Doo brain. &$#5$-#?!!!;&

I would leave it out until the next oil change. After a few thousand miles, it is unlikely there is any metal in there to be screened. After a while, I got tired of checking mine at every oil change. Now I do when I get a roundtoit.

Yup pictured to the right of the filler cap and left of the crankcase vent plug in back.

Don't feel bad about this. We have all done something similar, if not this same thing...even if we won't admit to it.  ;)

It's nice, at my age - I  don't  remember what I forgot.  So just sail along with a stupid grin on my mug.
The library will phone if I'm  overdue.

Yep, at least I didn't throw the baby out with the bath water and throw away the filter screen with the old oil. I suppose when I forget to change the oil and burn up the engine it's time for Domino's.
