The purpose if the screen is not to filter the oil, but rather to catch any metal or aluminum particles that are suspended in the oil and got pass the oil filter. That is to let you know a little bit about what is going on in the engine. I have hardly ever found anything in my basket and thats a good thing. Means all the material is staying where it belongs. So leaving is out for one change isn't going to hurt it. IMHO.

I forgot to mention this, that is why most Maintenance schedules call for the 1st oil and filter change around 500~600 miles, to remove any residual fragments from castings that fall off or anything from ring setting. After that a well maintained engine of quality shouldn't produce much of anything large enough to wind up in the strainer basket. Don't worry Dan, anyone can tell you that really good mechanics always have a few parts left over. Hee Hee

Thanks Mac, that makes me feel better. My SW has over 40k so not a new engine. I'll probably leave it out then until the next oil change.
