Big Sur slide

Wow,

My second favorite piece of earth has been cut off by a 1/4 mile long land slide covering the Pacific Coast Highway!
Did that affect any of you granola* guys?

I used to backpack in the Big Sur National Forest when I lived in Santa Cruz. Good memories. Hope they get America's most beautiful highway cleared so others may enjoy too.

Yeah it is a gorgeous piece of real estate. We lived on the Monterey Peninsula for 20 years and spent many nice hours down that way.

Heard about that yesterday and saw some photos. A fairly common occurrence along the coast, be good as new in short order.

The one I thought was cool was the gigantic rock in Topanga Canyon years ago that they had to dynamite to make it manageable, I think a chunk of its on display in a LA park somewhere.

On another note I was riding around the Palos Verde Peninsula yesterday and there is a section that has the warning "Use Extreme Caution" "Constant Land Movement". It's an area that is in effect a very slow moving landslide so the road gets repaired often and they run pipelines above ground.

In the 60's I walked the PCH with a backpack and guitar.
Bathed in the ocean, tried to eat some kind of shell fish I found in the shallows - but overcooked it apparently because it was like trying to eat small pieces of a City Grip tire....next day found a roadside sign warning of some kind of bacteria in the local shell fish!
Followed a stream off the side of the road and came upon a small waterfall and pooled area with a bar of brown soap sitting on a rock. I'd been bathing in the ocean since Ensenada ...so the freshwater pool was a wonder for me and my clothes. Laid out butt nekked with my clothes on a big rock to dry.

It's been a time...I spent a lot of time walking the shore line....and one morning I walked up off the beach onto a lovely bit of grass in very heavy fog.  Then found a green and some bunkers....and eventually walked onto a street with small, expensive shops. Pebble Beach GC...and Carmel?

I'd set out from Massachusetts specifically to see the Big Sur.
It did not disappoint!
Glad they will get this fixed without major problems.

Love the area. You probably wouldn't recognize Pebble Beach today. It's grown up a lot. Very expensive. Even the rich look for bargains there.

Sounds like an excellent hike, Stig !
I'd like that better than the John Muir Trail ! (Especially in summer months !)

Well, the bridge has also been taken out, and will be replaced with a steel one.
Last report I read declared a million yards had slid down, covering almost 1/2 mile of the PCH.
It will take a Loong time to truck that much elsewhere, After the EIR's have cleared the Coastal Commission.


Nepenthe owner and another biz proprietor have said they are not so concerned...  Perhaps most their business comes from the Monterey vicinity ?

I would plan a ride to photograph it, but chances are They would not allow anyone close enough to take pictures better than what is online already.

 I just got back from riding 961 mile round trip up to the redwoods above Santa Cruz. (On the SMax, not the Like) I would have liked to go the Big Sur route, but it was already closed to the south for bridge construction. I traveled inland once I got above Pismo Beach, until I shot across and caught highway 1 again. It was a great week. A lot of those miles were doing side trips, once I was there.

That sounds like it was a great ride on a nice scooter! Have always liked the Yamaha scoots.
If I recall correctly - You've got 3 or 4 more hp, 75lbs more weight, 3.5" longer wheelbase and about the same load capacity on your SMax than the LIKE200i.
Can you give us a ride report after this lengthy ride? That must have been a blast!

It's OK to show and talk other brands of scoots here....I've seen at least one guy other do it!

We all love scootering here....and this size of scoot is probably what many of us enjoy the most!
