mxu 250 cvt noise
« on: July 02, 2010, 03:58:40 AM »
i bought a mxu 250 3 months ago.  the first 180 miles were on flat land/fields and i had no problems.  but then i bought some land that has really big hills.  its almost mountainous.  i was going up a big one when suddenly it starts making this "sqeaking/slipping" type of noise.  i don't really feel much loss of power to the wheels.  maybe just a little bit at the slowest speeds.  i can still go up the biggest hills, and accelerate up to 30mph w/o issues.  but i still got the noise at low speeds and low throttle.  it sorta reminds of a belt slipping on a car, but its low pitched and not sqeaky.  it stops beyond 5mph or so.  for some reason it stops after the bike warms up.  not just the engine.  you gotta drive it around.  i think it might be some clutch.  i don't know anything about these cvt.   I'm kinda surprised it gets around like it does even though it makes this bad sounding noise.  its been a couple weeks i've had this problem.  but it hasn't gotten any worse even though i'm really stressing it on some giant hills.

i was just wondering if anyone knew what was wrong.  i'm thinking its something simple thats not worth taking it to the shop for.

..if it were mine, i would take it back for warranty...

..shouldn't be making that kind of noise...

..where's it sound like the noise is coming from??

..may be the starter hitting the drive face..missing a shim...

..may be your belt slipping....

..could be something really simple like that..

..could be something serious too...

..annd welcome to th' forum!!

It does sound like a clutch related problem. I would let the warranty guys look at it. It only takes a few minutes to inspect, and could save a ton of grief!

so i drove 2 hours to get the ATV and bring it back so i could put in the shop.  Now it doesn't make any noise at all.  It went from sounding like hell, to being alright.  I have no idea how a noise like this can just "go away".  If i take it to the shop as it is, it would appear as if nothings wrong with it.

only difference is that it was 95-100 degrees outside when it was noisy, and its about 5-10 degrees cooler outside now that it isn't noisy.  I've assumed its something in the cvt tranny slipping, but it could be something else.  I let it sit for 2+ weeks outside in 100+ degree weather and it never rained.  is something overheating?  maybe i had water somewhere and it dried out?

if i drive through this one dry creek that has some rip rap in it, it will coax a small noise out of it.  if i drive through ruts where one tire is in a hole and the other isn't, it'll do it.  happens quicker if you're turning full lock.  almost reminds me of "transmission wind up" like 4x4 truck could have with a locker being used on pavement.  if it gets tilted side to side in bumps is the only way i can bring this noise back so that i could show a technician and get it fixed under warrantee, but its hard to duplicate.  it's doing ok on flat lands, big hills, at all speeds.  its just the side to side motion you get from having one tire in deep hole.  strange...

any ideas????
