Fun with scooter salesmen...
« on: July 30, 2017, 08:44:02 PM »
I've spent many hours web shopping,  phoning, visiting, emailing, & that goofy computer live-chat thing the past few weeks.

Conclusion: It does pay off to use all the above. I always enlist at least two local dealers, as well,  bidding for my $. This time I used 4 local dealers. It is frustrating - but can be entertaining
My search radius was 400 miles.

I could not find a Forza ABS in my "willing to" price range - used or new.

New prices ranged from : good, $4500 OTD , but 350 miles away
to the very crazy - 3 miles away and just under $7,000 OTD!!

A chuckle: "Tom, the Forza is a great scooter! Good choice! Did you have a color in mind?" (Ma'am - they're red. All of them.)

Good fun - the call back from another saleslady, "Talked with the boss...Good news! We can match that price!"    She probably went out back for a smoke, stopped for a wee, sent some texts, Scratched, yawned and picked up the phone. Except.....she'd matched the "S" version price, but was selling the plain Jane version - which lists for $100 less.

Better fun: Local Honda dealer who waited 2 days to get back to me, with that @$7000 OTD offer. (not one red cent discounted off list for a 2 yr old, discontinued, Forza) I had to tell him I couldn't talk just then, because I was 30 miles away, talking with a Vespa salesman.

Spooky: "Hey Bubba!....has that thing got ABS? The red one!....No, the RED moped! Has it GOT ABS?"......(very long pause....) "Uh, sir, we don't know. Probably. We got it at an auction." (I then asked them to turn on the key and look for an amber ABS dash light. No light. No ABS. Saved me a 350 mile bus ride and a chat with Bubba.)

Best fun: Returning to my local Vespa dealer, as he opened the crate on a red 2018 Piaggio Liberty 150 "S".

My new red scooter. They have to prep it , and I probably won't get over to pick it up until next w/e.
That's OK, the hard part is over.

What an adventure.

Yeah, it'll be handy for transporting it to the photo locations in the back of the Transit van.  ;)

My fun with scoot/motorcycle salesmen starts when they cannot answer a specification question and cannot seem to find the answer anywhere.....

I found it amazing looking in the Aprilia catalog at the only scooter they have now in the US the SR Motard 50. In the brochure it says it's a 4 stroke engine but in the back the specs list it as a 2 stroke, lol.

Wow! That is serious! Sounds like Kymco's boners in user and service manuals! What's a salesman to do?

I took a big sniff Dan, but didn't smell a thing. Maybe he's saving that for later.  We have Chinese, Japanese, Italian and German scooters sent over here. Maybe the prez will want to start up an American scooter company. How bout the rebirth of the Cushman, but this time with a 113 cube S & S with a sprayer option, a drag chute, duel V & H and a three foot hand shift, topped with glow in the dark skull. And just to make it look really bad, a  14 inch wide tire out back. Look out rockets, a Made in America sled is on the prowl.  >:(

Congratulations Stig! Between your two scooters you got that patriate thing going with that red, white and blue. Keep us posted on your new ride. When I was at the dealer a couple months back with my daughter I was giving those a good look.

Already done. http://www.cushmanscooters2.com/

My Dad had a Cushman. Took it with him on the plane when he was at various airbases on TDY, in the Air Force.
I still rember two things about that scooter: candle-like headlight, and riding with him in a flood in Puerto Rico. Mom still laughs at the time he set fire to his package of drycleaned uniforms strapped on the back. She told that story again last month when i mentioned my scooter.
Apparently he thought all those people were just giving him friendly waves!

Good times on a scoot...

Nice story. Those metal bodies must have gotten hot!

The new ones are pretty slow for all the hp out of that Subaru motor, but considering the size of the wheels, maybe its for the best. If they had it geared to be freeway capable with slightly larger wheels I think they'd sell a lot better, especially the Eagle II. No amount of nostalgia could make me part with the price they are asking for Ruckus performance. It is interesting in another way, though. Subaru got its start in scooters and now anyone can buy a subaru/cushman.
