Batteries...To replace or not to replace....
« on: August 24, 2017, 01:42:30 PM »
Both my 2013 Like 200i's still have their original OEM batteries. I recently bought a brand new battery in the event the original battery on the Like that I use the majority of the time should die on me. I keep all my scooters on Battery Tenders year round, so I'm used to getting 4 or more years from my batteries.  I've been keeping the spare battery under my seat in the event the original goes bad on me while I'm away from home. Would you replace the original battery now or wait until the OEM one dies before replacing it or should I just keep the replacement battery under the seat in the event of an emergency?

The original battery on my scoot lasted 8 years. I do ride all year long, but much less during the winter.
3 years seem too short of a lifespan for a battery that's kept on a battery tender.

Doesn't the like have a kick start? If yes, I'd wait until the old battery is dead.

Is the new battery already activated (acid inside) and charged? If it is then the new batteries life has already started. Like Emil suggested if the scoot has a kick start might not need to worry about the battery until it dies.

I have the original battery in my Like so it is 5+ years old. I have used a battery tender on it as well and it still spins up the starter every time. I did however recently watch one of the Vespa Tech Workshop videos in which the tech notes that weak batteries kill starter relays and voltage regulators.  I will probably get a new battery before winter just as a precaution.

My question is, is the new one under the seat being kept on a tender as well? If not, by the time you need it, who's to say if will be up and ready?

Yes, it's fully charged and ready to go. I put it on a tender today and it went to fully charged status in just a couple of minutes.

You could also check by feeling out if the starter is cranking slower than usual, or if the old battery looks either swollen or 'shrunk'. Finally, a battery conductance tester should give you the truth.

I believe it is only the 200 that doesn't have the kickstart, my 125 has one.  Is the 200 the only LIKE model that you guys get in the US?
