How much Money do you invest in your Xciting500 annually?
« on: September 14, 2017, 05:51:58 AM »
I'm wondering how much investment you guys make annually on your kymco xciting500.

I'm particularly interested in knowing how you guys manage to cut costs of maintenance, what your break downs are and how much you ride.

I am especially interested in knowing a annual price break down from guys who ride their bikes a lot as opposed to just on the weekend.

I know money must be spent on the bike to keep it running properly. But is there a minimum baseline we should be spending annually to keep these machines running optimally?

I love my xciting500 and would love to figure out how to only spend a few hundred a year on maintenance if possible. I don't wanna spend as much as if I were owning a car, that's kinda one of the reasons I own a bike instead of the car (insurance is much cheaper, gas is much cheaper per gallon).

So, besides gas, looking primarily at maintenance charges, what's the experience of you guys who ride a lot?

I only do oil and filter every 3000km. Brakes, replaced at 40 000km only. Rear tyre, twice as often as the front, at least once a year. I will only mention regular maintenance costs in this thread.

So roughly about a thousand?
I suppose thats still fairly cheaper than car maintenance.

I had a Nissan xtrail 2003 4x4 once, and never spent a cent on it, except petrol. I put  50 000km on it in 3 years. The bigger the  scoot the more cash needed to keep it running is what i have found,as every part is larger, and more expensive when compared to smaller  scoots.  The only thing economical is petrol consumption.
I overlook all the above, because of what i consider to be the most  beneficial feature if i can call it that ; there are no traffic jams when  riding two wheels...😀.
All is forgiven, my scooter, when i can get home in  15 min, and all the cagers are still stuck 2 hours later!

Wow, $100 for a filter and oil!!!! When I change the oil and filter, on my DT300, it costs about $25-$30. Everything else is about the same.

Not true for me. I only spend about 30.00 a year on an oil change for my Honda SW 600cc. Have a car tire on rear that will go 40k so that's it except for fuel. Darn thing never breaks down or needs parts. Amazing scooter.

Maybe this would be better to figure annual costs over a certain period (5 years) or mileage (50,000 miles) since normal scoots don't necessarily need barkes, CVT belts, rollers, etc... annually because one year you are likely to spend more than another. This is not even mentioning the cost everyone pays differently for parts or if you have to pay labor.

CAVEAT LECTOR
I do not currently have a Kymco 500 but I do pay some attention to my operating costs on my Burgman 400. I will lurk around here for a while as it seems the Kymco 500 or perhaps the Downtown 300 are viable alternatives.

So...
I ride 18-20K miles per year and currently have 98K miles on the IceBerg. Over the past 5 years I have:

replaced the variator and driven plates 3 times (did an extra one for the front at which time I found out you should replace front and rear together, shredded the belt after 7K and got a ride home from a tow truck)
Replaced five belts.
replaced 10 rear tires and 5 or 6 front tires.
changed the oil around 28-30 times.
replaced the rear wheel (splines stripped at 97K)
replaced the rear brakes 4 times and the fronts once.
replaced the rear brake rotor at 60 or 70K
replaced the rear caliper (at 97K).

Cost for these items (doing my own labor for all)
TIres are around $150/ year
Plates run about $700 every 2 years
Belts are around $150 per year
Oil changes are about 5-6 per year (3 filters) for an annual cost of $70
Brakes (I recommend OEM as the cheap aftermarket pads tend to eat rotors and ultimately led to my need to replace the rear rotor and caliper) rear $30, front $60

Total cost of ownership (initial purchase, insurance, fuel and maintenance amortized over miles ridden) for the Burgman 400 has been right around $0.13-$0.15 per mile, assuming the scooter has no residual value at this point. This is slightly cheaper, but not remarkably so, than a small used car. As I tell my friends, ride because you like to ride. Not to save money.

I change my oil filter and oil every spring. That way it is fresh right before the heat of the season come in/on. Arizona heat that is. I use mobile one synthetic 15/50. Over 70,000 miles and zero issues. This bike cost almost nothing to keep on the road. :-*
