Running in my new Like
« on: December 06, 2017, 12:30:54 AM »
Cannot find any info on the procedures for running in my 200i apart from the first service is at 300 kms and the next at 1000 kms.
Not sure at what speed I should be running it in at and what type of oil should be used when it reaches 300 kms as I take it is still being at the run in stage.
Any advice?

Try this sight Paul. This all scooter, not just your Like 200i, but should apply.

Kymco gave a full page to this subject.
To summarize:
Page 19 of my LIKE200i owner's manual:
"Initial 500 miles ...less than 1/2 throttle
Up to 1000 miles ....less than 3/4 throttle.
Vary the engine speed and load. Load and then unload the engine.

Avoid constant low speed - avoid using full throttle for the first 1,000 miles (1,600km)"

I followed this advice and after 4 years my scoot does not use any oil. I change the less-than-a-Qt oil every 600-800 miles. Used good dino oil 10W-40 for 1000 miles then went to synthetic blends. (SHELL Rotella T-6 for the past 2 years)

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

Thank you.
Hey Stig,  that page is not included in my Like 200i owners manual but I do remember reading something similar in the 125 manual.  The 200i manual I received is 33 pages so it must have been updated.

Ride it like you stole it.  ;D

When I had my Like I followed the instructions in the manual. The same one Stig posted. I switched to synthetic oil after reaching 1,000 miles. Even after 14K miles it never used oil. I changed oil ever 1,200 miles.

No worries.  Will make sure it gets the dino oil at the 300km service.  The next service after that is at 1,000 km so will go to synthetic after that.  My service intervals are in kilometres and are at 300 km, 1000 km, then every 2,000 kms after that so what are the intervals that you guys in the US get that are in mileage?

I've always bought new cars and scooters so I've done a lot of 'running in' and some of the information out there is a bit out of date. Apart from going a little easy for the first few km I just drive/ride as normal and try to do a fair bit of acceleration / deceleration (hills are good) to bed the rings in. Maybe not quite 'ride it like you stole it!' but don't go too easy on it, you will have a stronger motor if you load it up a bit.

As far as oil changes are concerned I did the first one at 500km, then 2500km and each 2500km after that. Personally I think that's a bit excessive, my PCX had 4000km intervals and I used to do that every 5000km, but oil's pretty cheap and it doesn't hurt to do it a bit more often. I use Valvoline 'Engine Armour' 10W40, no harm in using motorcycle oil but it's really a waste of money, it's only needed if you have a wet clutch which scooters don't have of course. For scooter engines a good quality automotive oil is every bit as good and works out a lot cheaper.
