My 2009 500 is acting up

Well here is my problem, when I shut the bike off something is remaining energized. The only way I can keep it from killing the battery overnight is to disconnect the battery.

Here is what happens:
I drive the bike,
I get to my destination,
I turn off the bike,
The bike shuts off as normal but, the oil pressure light comes on,
If if put the kick stand down the kick stand indicator comes on,
If I put it back up it goes out but the oil light remains on.

I only mention the kick stand light to show that other systems are operating normal. I know that the kick stand light should come on with the initiation in the off position.
When I start the bike the oil light goes out as it should.

I am sure there is more but I have not seen it as of yet. I feel there is a relay that either is not releasing or that the ignition switch is somehow not operating right and is keeping something on.

Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this problem? I am looking for a direction as this weekend I will be pulling the faring and starting to get it fixed.

Any and all help is much appreciated.

OK I spent a few hours this weekend checking out this issue. I pulled every single relay I could find up front behind the faring and nothing turned out the light. So I went to the fuse box. I did not want to go here because each fuse covers so many things. But in any case when I pulled the "H/L" fuse the light went out. Put fuse in and back on, out and back out. Now the owners manual indicates that the "H/L" fuse is for the "Headlight Hi/Lo and high beam indicator light.

Well at this time I still had the faring off the bike so no feedback from the headlamp assembly was possible. What are the chances that the indicator in the dash is the culprit. I have never removed the instrument cluster before so is there anything I should be aware of before doing it?

I looked at the schematic and it seems that all power to the display module comes from the ignition switch. Unless you have a shorted wire somewhere, the ignition switch is likely the problem. It should disconnect the power when turned Off. A contact inside the switch mechanism is making a connection that it shouldn't be.  I would get some electrical contact cleaner (comes in a spray can with a thin straw-like nozzle), and spray it liberally down deep into the keyhole. The cleaner won't hurt anything -- it evaporates and leaves a protective film on electrical contacts and a very fine lubricant on mechanical parts. If you have the fairing off, you might be able to get the spray into the ignition switch contacts, which are likely down toward the bottom of the unit. Look for any open slots or holes to spray into. Then, with the battery disconnected, exercise the keyswitch back and forth through its range a couple of dozen times. Reconnect the battery and find out if this helped. Alternatively, or if that doesn't do any good, you can use an ohmmeter in conjunction with the schematic and test the ignition switch, if you know how to read a schematic. Last ditch effort would be to replace the ignition switch -- but I would test the switch first. Last thought: while unlikely, look for pinched or exposed wires in the ignition switch and dash area.

That is a top notch idea. I have spray cleaner and will try that tomorrow. I had not considered corroded or shunted contacts. I was really hoping that it would be one of the relays but none I have found seem to be sticking. and if I unplug them it make no difference.

Ok this has been fixed.
Don't ask me how or why because I have no idea, but for sh**s and giggles and because I got a great deal on a lithium battery, I replaced the battery. Low and behold the problem went away. My jaw dropping to the floor! I have tested the battery previously and my equipment and the mechanics equipment said the battery was good. I reinstalled the battery and the problem returned.

I checked the voltage and it was good, 12.6 VDC. I check the voltage when cranking, 10.6. Everything tests good. I put the battery on a Battery Tender charger for about 36 hours. Put it back into my 500 and the problem returns. Put the new battery back, all is good.

I really do t understand this and as an electrical engineer it baffles me. With the possibility of one exception, a micro short. Inside the battery there is something causing some sort of back feed to the system. I just have no rational idea why it happening.

The voltage is within 1/10th a volt running or static.

If you have any idea please contact me. But it been 4 weeks and not a single error as before.

Pardon me for chiming in after the problem is solved, BUT, it was a mystery until willembop looked at the wiring schematic/diagram which was a good first step. However, I do not think anyone would have either guessed or predicted the battery would haveanything to do with the problem! I would really like to know how that works! Gremlins? You fed them before midnight, dincha!

That is crazy but thanks for posting. That will remind me to not skip over the least obviuos things when the gremlins attack. I just had to replace the instrument cluster on my 09 X500. After doing that the speedo would only work intermittently. Seems good now after cleaning and adjusting pickup sensor. These Kymcos seemed to be plagued with electricle issues.

Get a loose battery ground on a Scion and watch the excitement on the dash board!
 Every kinda thing starts blinking.
So, now, when I see something weird with lights or instruments - I go have a look at the battery.
