Real life promo for ABS
« on: February 27, 2018, 10:25:47 PM »
One of the best adverts I've seen for why ABS is such a good idea on scooters - even small ones.
He's approaching a green light in the wet, then it turns yellow. Sad sight --- scooter sliding down the road.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

The relevant part is at 1:17. I've watched it several times, I still can't figure out what happened.

His speed was moderate. He didn't seem to be braking terribly hard. In the comments he confirmed both of these.
He also seems to be driving in the correct part of the road, following the car tires and off the painted surfaces. And the road didn't look that bad.

It seems he's blaming the stock IRC tires.

Regarding ABS -- I don't know how motorcycles/scooters do it, but I was annoyed to learn that on my van I needed the manufacturer's horrendously expensive tool to activate the ABS pumps if I wanted to properly change the fluid. It makes it even more expensive, and more importantly bothers me in principle.

I'm no expert  - but rider here grabs too much front brake for a non-ABS PCX Honda....front tire loses adhesion, front goes out from under and dumps him in the street.
A scooter in the wet, in a straight line,  with ABS ,will stop without losing adhesion with the pavement - no  matter what brand of tire you're on.
This is the beauty of ABS - stopping in the wet is where it shines.
As they say - you don't really need it until you need it.

Since the Honda has CBS it meant that even if he only used the rear brake lever he still would have activated 30% of the front brake.  CBS is what turned me off from getting a PCX.
