Speedometer issue
« on: May 01, 2018, 12:42:17 AM »

My speedometer works fine for a couple of miles then just goes to 0. Stop a bit for refreshments, take off and it works again...for a couple miles then back to 0. Tach and all other items on gauge pod work fine. It does this consistently every time. I pulled out the Speedo sensor and wipes it off just to try something. It had a very tiny bit of metallic residue on it. Not enough to cause issues I’m sure. Haven’t got to run it again to check it.  Could the sensor be getting hot and stop working then when it cools down a bit start working again??

I experienced that last summer in my machine, in the really hot part of the summer.  Without knowing for sure I blamed the high heat. The speedo would go to O when the machine got hot but would start working again when things cooled down. Once fall hit, no more issues and only once over the winter after a long snowplowing job that got things pretty warm.
In another post someone mentioned a connection for the speedo under the seat in the wiring there, I was going to plug and unplug and clean the connection just to try something. Once fall came on and it started working again, I guess I forgot about it. Gonna see what happens this summer.

I popped the connector off of the sensor(located under seat next to the oil dipstick) and it was nice and clean in there. Good news is my local dealer said they have a sensor that they use for diagnosis and they said I could use it to see if that’s the issue.

Now my speedo is acting up, regardless of the temp. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.  I have tried letting it sit for a minute in the off position then restarting, sometimes it works.  Hasn't done it for a long enough period of time to experiment with yet.  The rest of the unit seems to work fine, just the speed part acts up. Not a big deal really but do like to have everything working at all times, just a bug with me..

What kind of a job is replacing the speed sensor and what was the cost of the sensor if we might ask??  Thanks

Replacing the speed sensor is seriously only a 60 second job!  It’s right next to the oil dipstick.  Remove the one bolt holding it in(8mm socket if I remember correctly), there is enough wire to pull the sensor up higher for ease in removing the electrical connector. Plug the new sensor in, push the new sensor back in the hole and re-install the bolt...DONE!
Mine was $173 with tax at my local dealer.

Thanks for that info, before spending big bucks on a new speed sensor, I removed mine and cleaned the connection real good then applied some silicone spray.  After putting it back together still no speedo. Might be the speedometer itself, but before spending hard earned cash on that just wondered if any of the electrical wizards out there might know of an easy test with an electrical meter to see if the sensor is really bad??   Hate to drop big bucks on a sensor only to find it is the speedo itself or vice versa. Thanks in advance for any input anyone might have.

After the shock on the price of that speed sensor, I decided to look at the Kymco price list I have thru my service manual supplier.  According to them the MSRP on that part # 31350-LDB5-EOA speed sensor is just under 50 bucks.  Now I haven't contacted my dealer yet to see if there is a price update, however that is a wild cost difference.  The speedo head itself (digital display unit) is 150 bucks according to my source. I am still waiting to see if there is some kind of test to check out the sensor itself, just wanted to share what I have found so far.

Airshot: Would you mind PMing me please? I have a question about locating parts, pricing, etc. and since you have a supplier, I'd like to discuss with you.

Thanks!
Two things to consider...
1) The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse always gets the cheese.
2) Eagles may soar, but weasels never get sucked into jet engines.

Evil....I sent you a PM, hope it works .....Jew8201...my machine is also a 2015, had some minor issue with speedo last summer thought it was the heat, now it works some days but not other days. Willing to spend the bucks for the sensor if the real price is 50 or less but 150 for the speedo unit in the dash...???  might just rely on the gps for my speed...never use the speedo much anyway as long as the other gauges function

The dealer I went to was an Arctic Cat and Kymco dealer.  I ended up with the Arctic Cat sensor (Arctic Cat packaging) that they had on hand.  Hope I didn't just take one for the team!!!

I was ok with using the speedo on my gps as well, just didn't know how I was going to explain to a potential buyer someday that it only shows 477 miles but probably has 2500 miles on it when it might actually have 6000 miles on it.  I just like things to work.  Wish I had asked for the Kymco price!!
