Music on a motorcycle?
« on: May 05, 2018, 10:59:09 AM »
Sitting here on Rt 68 at 6:45am in my coffee village wondering things. Again.
These big bikes going by with the music blasting, can they hear much of it at speed?
Wouldn't it be better if it was piped into their helmet?
Or is the stuff roaring out of their handlebars mainly for our enjoyment?

Trainspotting Stig,
That old red Chevy truck with no muffler was bent pretty good between the cab and box. Sucker is about to break into two halves!
Did away with roadworthy inspections here yrs ago.

I believe it’s mainly for show. Wednesday night after church I heard this LOUD music coming down the road. I thought it was a young person with his widows down. But 1. It was REAL music. 2. There was only one light.
Then the large motorcycle passed by. My 86 year old mother looked at me and said “why? “. After I told her that he could have simply had the sound piped directly into his helmet, she REALLY couldn’t understand why he was riding with all that fuss.

Good thing church was out. He would have overpowered our singing inside. [emoji23][emoji23]

Some folks play their MC boom boxes way to loud. I find it more annoying than loud pipes. MC boom boxes don't produce the hearing damage like those tinny sounding Bluetooth helmet setups. That's because BT devices have to be turned way up at highway speeds. That and the wind noise is very damaging to the ears. MC boom boxes are buffered by the helmet thus reducing the potential for hearing loss.

I do like the BT setup to have my phone handy just in case my wife or kids call or when riding with a buddy to stay connected. Occasionally I use it for turn-by-turn directions, but for the most part I like to escape the mobile gadgets and just enjoy the ride. YMMV

I have Bluetooth, but I've seen shower radios used before when puttering in the city.

I can run music through my Garmin gps and Sena helmet bluetooth system and when using it I keep the volume low so it does not distract me.  No problems so far.

I'm a former band director and I don't have music playing while riding for two important reasons:
1. I would start analyzing the chord structure and be completely distracted from the traffic and get into trouble, and,
2. There's already so much music playing in my head that I don't need any more confusion than my old brain can handle! 😁😁

No music here, I don't want any more distraction from the distracted drivers around me trying to run me over.
Around nine years ago I was using a cheap car to commute around 120 miles/day.  Car had no radio; nothing for sound, I think it had been owned by a nun.  I never got around to putting even an FM radio in but got used to the nice quiet (except for voices and various music in my head) ;D for around a year.  Was sort of Zen-like, I guess.  Co-worker I sold the car to still has no sound in it after 7 years.  Maybe silence is a good thing?
