fuel gauge poor accuracy 2013
« on: May 22, 2018, 06:09:21 PM »
I've filled my tank and drove over 100km before the gauge moved down one digital mark.
Went and filled the tank and it took nearly a full tank.
Is this common?

The 5/5 mark I usually go about 130 km on. It represents five and a half litres.

The tank total capacity is 12.5 L. Are you saying at 4/5 bars it took nearly 12 litres to be full to the base of the neck?

Think of it as that the uppermost bar is less sensitive.

Which is a good thing to have the lower portions to be more sensitive so you have a better judgement of your fuel level as it gets lesser.

Both my DT300I scoots would/will go 200 miles with plenty of reserve. The gauge is more accurate near the bottom than the top like kneeslider said. I carried a small gas can on the first DT to find out just what kind of reserve I had after 200 miles. I chickened out at 230 miles with no bars left on the gauge, the gas pump symbol on the gauge flashing, no orange or yellow gas pump symbols showing on the panel and put 3.2 gallons ( I think!) in the tank! I was happy as a calm to know there was a 30 mile reserve!

If I finally understand, that is not right. I can ride about 80 miles before the first bar (of 5) disappears. Then I can ride another 120 miles and have one or two bars showing. Fueling at that point usually will take 2.5 to nearly 3 gallons. Is that description totally different than your experience?

Bump up for some recent approximations. Looks like 90 miles to the first segment to open. That leaves 4 segments to empty. Assuming 74 miles/gallon, 200 miles will be about 2.7 gallons leaving .6 gallons in the tank. That should be the last segment blinking.

So just consider .5 gallons per segment. When the last segment is left you can make 25 to 30 miles til flameout.

Rely on fuel gauge....you are going to walk.  Use trip miles (if one) or miles from odometer, remembering miles reading on fill up----and fill long before you need it---has worked for me for the last over 1.5 million two wheel miles---I hate walking!!

The idea is to use both so you can crosscheck. It's a pilot thing....

Works for me and the only thing I've ever piloted has been a motorcycle!

Nothing happened on a Honda Forza fuel gauge for the first hour on the highway. "This baby is getting  G r e a t  mileage!!"
Then the tank would spring a leak. Apparently :)

Hi,

The motorcycle fuel tank will never show an accurate value due to its powerful movement, I also use a daily counter to show the distance traveled. Flashing of the last segment is quite accurate.
