That oil strainer screen

Still never found anything in this screen - except a couple small bits on the first oil change which I did after the first 60 miles.


The big cap is a very soft metal - and after overtightening them some owners destroy them in attempts to remove them.
Spares are available on ebay for a couple of dollars. I take it easy when tightening this cap, and use a new Toyota Teflon/metal washer on the drain plug. (bag of 10 for @ $3.00 on ebay)


Used 10W-40 Suzuki "Performance" oil left over from the Burgman. Have a gallon jug of it.


Cleaned off the bottom of the engine and re-applied some ACF-50 to the engine area, center & side stands and these drain fasteners. Drained the puke tube and lubed both stands. Gave the muffler a squirt of heat paint.
Will do the gear oil when it rains next. Too hot today!

The sump plugs are really soft, but I'd rather have a soft plug than accidentally strip the threads from my engine!

Always worth carrying a spare :)

I purchased a 6 point box end combination wrench just for that plug after reading so many "I stripped my drain plug" posts. I still have both original plugs installed.

Been my experience on a few scoots as well.  I've seen a couple pics, notably in chinascoot forums, where there's been a lot there on new bikes, & on a bike that was developing problems.

At this point, after 5 yrs, I think I'll quit fooling with this....nothing ever in there...just inviting a leak to develop.
Considered not removing it this time, but decided to have a look.
Probably not again.
Maybe 3 tablespoons of old oil in there.
As often as I change oils - 600-800 miles using good brands of oil.
A bit of old is not an issue in my mind.

I don't pull it every oil change on the SYMs.  Usually every other just because if I do see something there it means something.

As you note it's just another spot to create a leak and an opportunity to strip something.

Me too - my 17mm 6-point spanner has saved my bacon a few times now!
