Clutch Chatter

Another project I worked on back in April. My clutch started to slip/grip (chatter) on take off sometimes quite violently that was really bothering me. I figured it might have been a issue with gear oil mist having ended up on the clutch shoes before the dealer had finally fixed it from leaking into the CVT. I pulled the CVT cover off and the clutch bell. Pretty much what I expected, hot spotting on the clutch bell and dark somewhat sticky bands on the clutch shoes. A bit of sanding inside the clutch bell, sprayed brake cleaner (not that crap we have here in CA with acetone in it) to clean off the clutch shoes and then blew them off with air after some light sanding of them. Put it all back together and so far after 3,000 miles still seems to be doing just fine. A little concerned with the pulley wear though at 8,000 miles.

It is sad that they did not do a proper  quality check. I often find other  things wrong when I get  the scoot back from the workshop. It is such a hassle  to confront them, if I can sort it I do.

I sometimes think fixing clutch chatter is more Art than Science.
I just know that, when it's gone, I'm clam-happy.
It was a real issue with the Burgman 400 until I  learned to give it the righteous beans on every  take-off! Town folk just took me for a hot-rodder.
The LIKE200I has been in a happy place for the past 4 yrs. So I  don't mess with the clutch faces or the bell. I give it the beans, a small bowl!, on take-offs.....but no one notices!

That's exactly what I would have done. Why would you take it back to someone who didn't do the job right in the first place. If you can do it yourself, you know that the job is done right. The shops will tell you that once oil creeps into the pads, you can't clean them and they need replacing. I find, like you did, that if you use the right cleaning agent, it gets the oil out. If the pad had completely soaked in oil, then the oil does keep creeping out to the surface. I've learned this stuff out of necessity when I was young and couldn't afford to purchase new parts!

The place on the pulley that the groove is in the front variator indicates that you do a fair bit of high speed riding...no?
