Noisy engine when cold

When I start the motor I have a noise coming from the engine. Hard to pinpoint if it’s tappets or timing chain. It sounds like it’s the timing chain, it gradually disappears when the motor warms up after about a minute. I’ve changed the oil and adjusted the tappets. I have adjusted the automatic timing chain adjuster, and will screw the internal screw on the adjuster and release it while the engine is hot tomorrow so hopefully it will take up any slack in the chain. The only other option is to try an oil additive or use a fully synthetic oil. Any other ideas as it’s driving me nuts. It’s really not that bad just annoying I like things to be just right.

They are usually much quieter than air-cooled engines. Could you or did you post a video/audio?

It only has 14000 kilometres it’s a light clattering sound definitely not bottom end or bearing noise. If it disappears after the motor warms up it must be either expanding of component or oil is reaching the affected area. I only have limited things I can do I’m womdering if people have had success using different oils or additives

Ron, Oil merchants will sell you something to fix that----- but I think that's called magical thinking.

Maybe it's just the valves when cold.

If you haven't tried already, maybe an oil flush and refill with a good quality oil.

After checking my oil it was over full by about 150ml. Adjusted the camchainadjuster while hot it’s a lot better.

My iridium plug arrived, after installing it I noticed idling was a lot smoother and the scoot started better. I haven’t checked high speed running but it was a worthwhile improvement.

Dogs, thank you for the follow-up/through! Too much oil is never, usually never any good. The Honda cam chain tensioner were always a mystery to me because nothing ever seemed to change. The Kymco version looks A LOT like Honda from the 60s. Yes, go ride that thing!

Hello All
This is my first post in the group
I have the same problem, and when I went to the mechs. he told me that the Roller Weights is the problem and i need to change it and better to change the Variator Drive Wheel Assy.

I didn't change it yet coz i am not sure of his opinion

but the sound come from the rear wheel the place of the driving belt

Welcome! Let's start with year and miles on your Downtown. Then is this engine speed noise or road speed noise? Does the noise change with the engine warming up? What is the oil level? Last change? Could you post a video with sound as that always is a help.

32000 Km (19883.878 Miles) year 2014 the noise change when the engine warm up and if the engine is cold and I increase the speed the noise disappear or reduced

The noise when I am still warming up in the morning or even after a long time parking and while putting on my safety gear and the scooter on the main stand 
I change oil every 4000 KM to 5000 Km (2500 miles to 3000 miles) and the noise has not relation with the oil changing or level because I hear the noise even after change the oil on the next day morning

Please check valve clearance and set to .1 mm/.004". I will bet you find at least one that is too big! Too much, OK, too little,  real bad. Too much valve clearance is just noisy.

Stupid question - it has been mentioned twice at this topic that an "automatic timing chain adjuster" has been adjusted manually to reduce noise levels.
 It sounds like these "automatic" timing chain adjusters could cause problems ?
