At sunrise today I stopped by a small memorial to the men from this county who died* in the Vietnam War, plus a memorial for K-9 war dogs & handlers.
There is also a stone dedicated to the 1st of the 3rd Marines who served in Vietnam from Sept 1964 to Oct 1965.
* "Killed" implies a death resulting
from combat, but I believe that there are always included those who "died" from non-combat incidents
within a combat zone. My high school class president is on the Wall in D.C., but his death was as a pilot on the tarmac of Bien Hoa, "non-hostile, air loss over land", 19 days after arriving in country.
A distinction lost on me - he didn't crash in San Diego while delivering the mail. Perhaps it has to do with undeclared wars?
