Oil coating underside of Kymco 2016 Like 200i
« on: July 18, 2018, 02:59:45 AM »
Hi Everyone,

Just changed my oil today and noticed that the underside of the crank case and engine is coated in an black oily dirty mix. Any suggestions as to what could be causing this, the scoot seems to be performing normally and generally I put about 150 miles on it a week. On the last oil change I didn't notice this build-up, but prior to that had noticed the shop overfilled the oil on the bike and upon changing the air filter after a dirty NYC winter of riding noticed some oil in the air box.

I intend to clean the buildup off later this week and try to locate the source of the oil leak but any tips on where to look would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Jon

Drain it and properly fill it.   The reason for the oil in the air box is due to the overfill.   Same thing happens with my other bike only that one is 1800cc!   Over fill it and it will bleed into the air box.   Clean it all up with Simple Green or something similar and check it again later.

Thanks David,

But when I noticed the oil in the air box it was 2000 mi ago and I then drained and properly replaced the oil.

I changed it again today and that's when I noticed the oily gritty coating on it's underside.

I just am wondering what could be a likely source.

Ah okay Jon.  Sorry for I am new to these little scoots.   If it were me I’d throughly clean it, ride it and then check it to see where it’s leaking from.

Hi,

Mine's continuously covered in scuzz underneath, much of which is oily road dirt. I think of it as corrosion prevention; I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah, clean it up with some waterless cleaner (brush and rags), then remove seat bucket and center panel. Check around valve cover for oil. Check cover bolts for snugness ...do NOT overtighten. Just small tool snug.
Some road crud is normal - but you seem to be describing something more than that.

Thanks guys,

I'll get it cleaned up as soon as my work slows, hopefully next week.  Stig, as for taking out the seat bucket, the thought didn't occur to me but it is good idea to take a look from both top and bottom and something I haven't tried yet.  I have always wanted to add an iridium spark plug, so perhaps the benefit will be two fold, and I'm sure it could use a good cleaning under there.

Stig,

If you have any other suggestions as to under the seat bucket maintenance that I might want to perform at 5400mi, I would appreciate your suggestions; as it's a lot of work to find the time and space to take the like apart in this town.

Thanks, Jon

No Jon, at 5400 miles not much needs doing under there. I just like to wipe things down, maybe some armorall and ACF-50 on rubber & metal parts, the Iridium plug after the front panel is off.

It probably just road grime. On my Kymco, oil leaks from the valve cover gasket and stator wire insert.

Karl, what's the puke tube?  I have noticed a rubber/silicon tube hanging down on both my scoot and my friend's Zuma, not sure what it's purpose?  Is it the puke tube?

Black plug in the end? That's the puke tube if there is a plug. Nasty fluid inside, smells gassy but will falter the engine if not stop it if it fills up. An unplugged tube is for carb overflow or battery. You don't have a carb on the Like and batteries don't have a drain anymore on Kymcos.

Karl,

So I cleaned out the crank breather puke tube, and there was some nasty stuff mixed in with a small amount of oil, she has been running a bit rough lately, so the tip was appreciated.

That said, there were also two more tubes, one fairly long 6"- 8" with a very small diameter hose and one right next to the puke tube and about the same length and diameter, neither with plugs.

Any idea what those are for?  I can't imagine they are artifacts of batt/carb drains, but I don't know.

I just don't have a lot of experience with these modern small engines, trying to learn.

Thanks, Jon
