Help with no spark
« on: July 26, 2018, 01:02:41 AM »
I have a 01 People 50 2 stroke with no spark. I have changed stater, coil and cdi and kill switch. Fuses are good and there is continuity in every wire I check. Anyone know what I am missing? I want to get this up and running...

Check the coil with an ohm meter and tel us what you found. Primary and secondary.

Whoa, there! Did you change scales on your multimeter for measuring the secondary? I realize how this question sounds but it is crucial for determining what the problem is.

What do I set it on to check secondary? Also when I check continuity on the piece that connects to the plug there is none. Is this right? Sorry electrical problems baffles me

Just set meter to 20k got a reading of 2.54 to the wire nothing to the plug cap

Regardless of the secondary, no continuity to plug cap from terminal on secondary is not good. That should read near zero on the lowest scale because it is usually a metal wire. On the 20k scale reading 2.54 should be about right. The way to get better electrically is to do what yer doin': asking questions and experimenting, that is trying to find what works and what does not. Wish I could draw a picture on here!

The spark coil primary is fairly heavy wire with a few turns = low resistance = low scale on meter for resistance. Secondary is very fine wire with lotsa turns = high resistance = high resistance scale on meter. No connection electrically to each other. One end of secondary is grounded, other end is plug wire and cap.

Thanks. I guess my next step is to stop Monday and try to get a plug cap. I might try auto zone to see if they have something that would work. Will let you know

8.59 ohms is what I get for the secondary without rubber boot

I am getting .4 volts ac to the cdi. I have a dc fired cdi is that correct?

I don't know if it is ac or dc. But I do recognize your information is confusing. Back to basics: primary ohms? Secondary ohms?

Still sounds like the coil is good.

Let's back up a bit. How do you know you have no spark?

I put a new plug in and ground it to bare metal

OK, that's what I had hoped to hear. I read where you replaced nearly everything related to spark. Were all these parts replaced because the engine quit/would not start?
