What I believe may be a clutch problem /noise - need help
« on: August 02, 2018, 01:48:05 AM »
If I can get some help troubleshooting my problem it would help me out a bunch.
What is happening from 0-10 mph the scooter runs perfect
After the 10mph mark I get I squealing /screeching coming from the rear end. If I let off the throttle it stops and if I give it more throttle the noise progressively gets worse.
I think I have narrowed it down to the clutch or belt or something in that area.
If you all agree. Is there a tutorial or video that can help me out with disassembly and putting in new parts to see if it helps out.
Thank you for your help

Probably the inner clutch bearing is dry.

One thing I thought was weird. If I'm not on the throttle at all and I hit a big enough bump it with make a small screech nose. Does that sound like same thing also.
What is the fix for this problem.?
Thank you for the help

So you are referring to the bearing inside the clutch assembly. Do you happen to have a part number for that. Also is there a manual I can purchase or download that has specifications like bolt torque and disassembly ect. Also sign I dive into this project is there anything else I should just go ahead and replace while i have it taken apart...
Thank you all

Probably won't have to replace the bearing, just a small dab of grease. Yes, there are two bearings inside the clutch assembly. The outside is a sealed ball bearing. The inner is a needle roller bearing with a separate seal. Measure belt width, inspect belt to ensure good condition. Parts diagrams available online like www.kymcopartsmonster.Com or similar. Read everything on this forum relating to CVT maintenance and there is a lot!

Will I have to take apart the clutch assembly to get to where I need or will it be accessible ?

You will have to remove the clutch assembly from the transmission shaft.

But I won't have to completely take apart the clutch itself?

Nope. I am on my fourth Kymco, had all clutches off, never had to disassemble a single one. Had a squeak in #3 and did what you need to do if only to rule out one thing that could cause that noise. Your big problem will be holding that clutch bell while you undo that nut. You will need to make a tool to do that. I put a picture on here a couple of years ago of two flat steel bars, 1/4" hole in each end, three 1/4-20 bolts 1.5" long with three nuts. Actually, one bolt can be much shorter since it goes through both steel bars. This is your holder for removing and replacing the clutch nut. Works on the front, too.

It looks like if you use an impact it comes off no problem...

I'm diving into this project on Monday. One question I have is when I purchased this scooter it was already making this noise. If the previous owner road it for long periods of time with this going on could there be damage done. Or parts that need replaced or should it be ok. And I want to thank you all for the help you have provided. Much appreciated.

So I took everything apart and did some cleaning and greasing. And after putting everything back together it is doing the same thing but worse. To the best of my knowledge and research I have done I think the clutch is slipping on the bell housing. I want to try a new clutch and bell housing without breaking the bank if anyone has any suggestions. Since this is just an experiment still and I don't want to sink a ton of money into this project.

I did find these on ebay.

Any advice ?

Hey man, I bought a used 150cc Kymco and it's doing the exact same thing that you were describing. And I mean exactly.
I took the bell housing off and cleaned it with them alcohol, I clean the cut ties with some alcohol also, or try to. Reassembled it all sounds just the same as it did when I took apart. What I'm wondering is, have you found a solution to your problem?
