Wow, Stig... That's a scary situation indeed!
Speed might be a lot of fun, but I'd bet that it's the cause of at least 90% of all accidents for riders. The faster one is going, the less time one has to react to a hazard. That doesn't even begin to take into account the people in cars who just don't think about riders being on the road, and who aren't being attentive. Even then, the added closure rate of higher speeds is a major contributor.
The only solution for this that I've come up with (and I'm by no means genius enough to think I have any real solutions other than defensive riding) is to add more lights to the bike. As many of you know, I'm in the process of revising my turn signals, but very high on the list of modifications to be made is the addition of very-bright running lights. That, and the high-reflectivity of the gear I wear is the best thing I believe I can do to help protect myself from the inconsiderate and downright negligent drivers we all encounter on a daily basis.
