Xcting 500 Brake cable
« on: August 29, 2018, 11:01:33 AM »
Hi can anyone help, my brake cable on my xcting 500 has failed.  Ive had a look at the cable does not seem broken.  ive checked the handle and its still clicking.  Ive adjusted the screw that does locks the back break but it seems that the handle does not pull at the cable.

Obviously this is not an easy job, can anyone offer some advice on how to fix???

many thanks in advance

What year is your 500?
The new models have hydraulic disk brakes so no cable

Hi it is an older model 2008,  its definitely cable hand brake but i find it so difficult to work on the scoot as access to the inside is so limited without taking the most of the plastics and fairings off.   Also in my experience once they come off they never really go back the same after years of hard riding etc.

there does not seem to be a snapped cable however it simply does not work.  very annoying.

I have concluded this is a cable operated parking BRAKE, correct?

Yes, I confirm the handbrake is cable operated.

You have no choice. Regarding removal of the plastics. The fairing is fairly straight forward.
4 + 4 screws on the rider side. And a single screw top centre just above the light. Then it sides forward, and up to lift it out of the lower fairing section  and remember  to disconnect the main lamp and side lamp cables. Now you will be able to see the handbrake innards.

yes its the parking brake operated with the handle (which still clicks through the stages) and all appears ok.  but it does not pull suffiently on the other side for it to actuall lock.   its a real pain as Im not sure where to start and really do not want to take plastic fairings off as nothing ever goes back correctly. Ive done 50,000km on it and it twisted all with time and weather.

Is there a convenient way to adjust this parking brake cable?

There is something that can be adjusted at the caliper, but there is also an adjuster under the fairing, so if he has already adjusted at the caliper then as I said, the fairing has to come off. 7 screws, easypeasy.

I have to take mine off again, as I have to remove oil from the coolant filler pipe, until I come into funds to fix this issue. Then I will confirm.

Ok, that is how easy it is, 5 min, and I can see a 13 mm nut that could be adjusted.
That is background, centre right.

Correction on caliper adjustment, I don't see anything there that can be adjusted.

Ok, this is the definitive answer to adjusting the hand brake.
I have had to strip my scoot right down to  bare metal to remove all the water pipes to clean out the oil sludge and found the brake adjusting point.
It is just forward of the right rear foot pedal. Unfortunately, basically all the mid section and seat bucket area must come off.
I will show photos as a picture is like a 1000 words.
Please ignore my advice about taking the front fairing off.

xsell777,
Thanks for your post and the photos.
I continue to be impressed with your mission to keep this scooter on the road!
I know finances have something to do with it.....srill, lots of folks would have bought a horse by this point.
Hang in there with this latest issue --- Kymco would do well to reward you with something....a beer can cozy, or a Pulitzer. Something!
