Weird cold weather starting problem
« on: September 19, 2018, 03:05:42 PM »
Hey, new to the forums (new to any forum).  I have a 2015 450i camo utv bought new. When it's cold we will say below 10 degrees and below, utv fires up no problem. Runs great. I'll run around neighborhood heat it up then shut it off. So problem happens after I shut it off. After 15-20 min of letting the Machine sit when I try to start, the fuel pump will not turn on.  Won't start. I have to push into the garage and let it warm up little bit ( not a lot, garage is unheated) maybe 30 min then the pump will start again.   If I turn the key on right after I shut it down the pump fires up no problem but after the 20 min it won't.   This happened 4 days after I bought it stranded on a lake,  dealer said relay and replaced it but the temps went in the 20s after that and really couldnt test the fix till next winter.  I've been just not using it on really cold days but would love to.
The dealer I bought it from went under last year so they were not able to follow up.
I bought this in dec 2015 and have been dealing with it ever since.   Any help or ideas would be great since ice fishing season is approaching fast.

Everything I can think of wouldn't present itself as you describe. One of the guys around here has a number for the engineers I believe, try calling in the front door first at 864.327.4744. If you got the receipt from the defunct dealer, should help as well.
Sounds like maybe the pressure sensor is kicking out on ya somehow but don't really fit the symptoms.

A little confused about temperature affecting this. 10 deg and below, starts fine. Fuel pump won't run after it cools down. But will run when it warms up in an unheated garage. Fuel pump runs OK when up to temp. Does the fuel pump run when going through self-test right after turning ignition on? Does the fuel pump run after self-test when brake pedal is pushed and starter used? Sequence on my 500i is: key on, fuel pump runs, all warning lights lit. Self-test ends, pump stops, all lights out except check engine. Start attempt fails, starter will not spin if brake pedal not pressed. Press brake pedal, Starter spins and fuel pump runs. So what does yours do, step-by-step?

Had to use the 500i to pull lawnmower out of a bog. Listened to sruff and had to correct errors!

If the wheeler spent the night outside -5 it would start in morning.  Fuel pump test turns on I can hear the pump.  It's only after I run it for a while and let it cool down when problem starts.  So after I shut it off if I turn the key pump starts it's test as you called it and shuts off like normal.  I can turn key on 10 times and pump will turn on 10 times and will start.   But after what seems like a set time which I haven't nailed down exacts call it 20 min the pump will not turn on, then I know it won't turn on. That's when I need to warm it up in garage . Garage is normally around 30 degree even in extreme cold.  I get an error code on my dash which I wish I had now but I looked it up and was a generic code that pretty much said no power to pump.   Something seems to be cutting power, relay or maybe the computer it's self..

I know this all sound weird,  I'm no mechanic but I've rebuilt motors over the years and there's not much I can't fix or at the very least know what the problem is.  This has me , gear head buddies and a local Atv repair shop stumped.  I gave up till I found this forum yeasterdy.  Other then this problem thing runs great.

I will try the brake pedal thing but I start in neutral normally which doesn't require brake pedal but at this point I'll try anything.  There has been talk of running direct power from either the batt or the cig lighter port direct to fuel pump but not sure if that will damage pump or even work

There may be that much difference between the UXV 500i and your 450i as to the brake pedal interlock. There are a few on here with 450i machines WHO COULD CHIME IN but so far have not. You may have an electrical intermittent if you got a 'no power to pump' code. I would get a tube of dielectric grease at the auto parts store and treat every electrical connection you can get to. Unplug, grease all connections in each plug then plug 'em back together. This is a good thing to do anyway, especially an off-road utility rig. Since it runs reliably once it starts, I don't think you have an actual component failure. But a connection failure seems likely. Really want to hear what works on this one!

I have never had problem starting my '15 450i that I bough brand new 4 years ago. been out with it as cold as -5°f   mine stays outside, or carport to keep snow off

I have however had problems starting my Suzuki V-strom, not when I park it outside, rather when I park it in my basement 55°-60°f .   IMHO it is the rather primitive FI,  I roll it outside before I start it, but not immediately, first I roll it outside (shovel any snow or sanding if necessary) and put my gear on after cause I don't want to work up a sweat with my gear on. Anyway, I don't really have a problem starting it, rather an issue keeping it running, I have to babysit the throttle till it's warm. I believe the bike's water temp sensor is telling the ECU the bike is warm enuf to run without an enrichend mixture, cause the water temp from being inside is 40°-50° warmer than the ambient air temp

I also have a 2015 450i and mine starts great in any weather or temperature.  Now I will add that after a cold start, if I only run it for a couple minutes such as backing out of the barn to get at the mower, then shut it off it will stall a few times when I go back to start it again. Seems like the temp setting gets messed up if it only runs for a couple minutes. Now if I let it run for at least 5 minutes it does not do the stalling thing.   However mine will only start with the brake pedal pushed down no matter what gear it is in!  Even neutral, does not engage the starter until the brake pedal is depressed.  If your dealer is closed (sorry about that as the ones in my area are doing well) the factory USA should take over. Look up the website and give them a call, they have been very helpful to me.  "Kymco USA" down south I think the Carolinas??

That's what I thought: 450i start interlock like the 500i. Push brake pedal to engage starter and as Airshow said, in any gear or neutral. On mine, when pushed enough to start, the pump noise slows down slightly. Guess that is when the brake lights come on...
