Have you been accepted as an apprentice already?  Do you have a place to do practice work?

Try to find some cheap or free small machines such as lawn mowers or broken down motorcycles, mopeds or scooters.  Take them apart and put them together and make them run well without leaking.   ;D

Post your mechanical questions here or a similar forum as you go.  Good Luck!

Offer your time to work for free after school or work just for the experience. Greatly consider a tech school.

They have schools here that teach you how to be a m/c mechanic.

Where are you located?

My first (and best) teacher on motorcycle mechanics (and life) was the book "How to keep your Volkswagen alive  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Muir_(Volkswagen)  . yes, not about motorcycles.... but I recomend it to anyone learning how to fix small air cooled engines. Most of what I do in my shop I lerned from this book. Hope this helps!

Knowing a whole lot of people with 1970-80s Vespa P200Es, I gotta tell you, they agree that they do about an hour of maintenance/repair for every 6-8 hrs. of riding, whereas I do about an hour of maint/repair for every 60-80 hrs. of riding. So, there is something to that.

Well, I did not have too many problems with NRG or Beverly, but I did have a lot of problems with my Alfa Romeo.
Anyhow, they are not exactly known for great quality of build, but nowadays, it is quite difficult to say what is premium brand and what is not...

Italy=great design
Italy<>quality

I have to admit, My Kymco  was bought for my wife, who didn't ride it and became my back-up bike for when the Vespas (p200s) were broken. Thats a lot of the time.

Wow, my 79 Vespa p200e runs great with much less work. I have over 50,000 miles on her (one engine rebuild at 30,000) and just do routine maintanece / cleaning every 3 month. Though I love my Kymco, I dought she will be that dependable in 30 years.
